Rogers, Elizabeth "Betty" Gertrude Clark
March 22, 1934 - December 12, 2022
Betty Rogers died December 12, 2022, at Friends Homes Guilford in Greensboro, NC where she lived since the spring of 2011 with her husband Julian until his death in 2019. She was born in 1934 in Hendersonville, NC, the second of three children. She graduated fromSullins High School in Bristol, VA and attended Woman's College in Greensboro. She belonged to First Presbyterian Church, was a Sunday school teacher, and part of the Women's Circle.
Betty had an eclectic work career. She did data entry at UNC-Chapel Hill, founded the Crescent Observer local newspaper, owned an antique business, worked at AM Pullen, Lucas Travel, High Point Furniture Market, House of the Dove, Green Cove Camp, Residential College at UNC-G, was a water safety instructor, and a button maker. . .and held many other interesting side jobs. She served on many committees during her 11 years at Friends Home Guilford, as well as on the Board of Trustees.
Betty was in the very first "over 40" Outward Bound group in the 1970s. She enjoyed spending time with her family hiking the Appalachian trail, canoeing down various NC rivers, and summers shelling, swimming, bird watching, boating, fishing, and chasing her children in Morehead City. Upon his retirement in 1987, Betty and her favorite sailing partner, Julian, moved onto their 42' sailboat, Primrose, and for three years lived aboard, sailing from Canada to the Bahamas and settling on the North Carolina coast in the Wilmington/Oak Island area.
Betty was an amazing person. She was kind, generous, caring, direct, and passionate about things she cared about. If you were in her camp, you knew it. She didn't hold back her love. . .or her opinions. She watched out for those who were less fortunate than she and always wanted what was best for all–not just herself. She was not bothered with trying to please everybody–instead she focused more on what she believed was the right thing to do. She and the love of her life, Julian, raised 5 interesting children to be decent, independent, and outspoken humans. Her legacy will live on through generations and friendships she fostered throughout her time here.
She is predeceased by her husband of sixty-five years and siblings, as well as a grandson, Julian Richard Rogers, III. She is survived by her children Lee Boxman (Jack) of Pleasant Garden, Amy Chauncey (Peter) of Durham, Chris Gergle of Raleigh, Julian Richard Rogers, Jr. (Juliet) of Morehead City, and Neill Rogers (Elise) of Tryon, as well as a flock of grandchildren: Emmalee Morgan and David Morgan of Thomasville, Krysta Chauncey-Allen (Lee) and Miles of Boston, MA, Philip Chauncey (Brianna) and Brooks of Durham, Kelly Rogers of Morehead City, Lily Gergle of Raleigh, and Luke, Sadie, Sam and Maddie Rogers of Green Creek.
The family deeply appreciates the devoted staff and volunteers of Friends Homes Guilford who made her daily life safe and satisfying.
