Smith, Ellen Spear
October 17, 1930 - October 12, 2021
Ellen Spear Smith passed away peacefully on October 12, 2021 at Well-Spring Retirement Community. She was born in New York City on October 17, 1930, the daughter of the late Maurice R. Spear and Anne B. Spear.
Ellen was a talented and outgoing person who loved life, never met a stranger, had an amazing sense of humor, quick wit, and positive attitude. She was quite adventurous and secured her pilot's license and first soloed in her Cessna airplane on June 29, 1970. Acquiring her NC real estate license in 1974, she was a successful NC realtor with a nearly 40-year career of helping clients purchase and sell homes. She spoiled her clients, looking after every need and personally delivering meals to them with her famous picnic basket full of food and "goodies." She was a longtime member of Starmount Forest Country Club, where she loved to play golf and made a rare hole-in-one, and attended many memorable social events with friends and family. She volunteered with numerous groups and worked on many causes. She was Arbitrator of the Year for the Better Business Bureau of Central NC, donated over 12 gallons of blood to the American Red Cross, and served for many years on the Bereavement Committee for Temple Emanuel. She truly loved to travel, and travel she did, visiting numerous countries around the world, seeing historical sites, and riding many different animals, including a yak in Outer Mongolia.
Ellen is preceded in death by her husband Douglas Smith, and sisters Dorothy Schwartz and Muriel Yusen. She is survived by her children Daniel Marks (Fay), John Marks (Lori), Marianne Langer (Allen) and Kelly Marks (Nancy); grandchildren Devorah Stowe (Sean), Ilana Beltz (Kevin), Matthew Marks, Stephen Marks, Cameron Marks, Grayson Marks, and Kendall Marks; great-grandchildren Ziva and Thaddeus Stowe.
The family would like to thank Esther McCain and Denise Williams for their long-term, compassionate care of our mother.
A memorial service will be held Monday, October 18 at 11 a.m. at Temple Emanuel, 1129 Jefferson Road, Greensboro followed by burial at Westminster Gardens Cemetery at 3601 Whitehurst Rd. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions and donations may be made to Temple Emanuel.
