GREENSBORO – Jack Francis Masarie, age 80, passed away on Thursday, March 23, 2023 at Beacon Place.

Jack was born on November 25, 1942 in San Francisco, Calif. to the late Attilio Romeo Masarie and Amelia Isola Masarie. In 1960, Jack graduated from Mills High School in Millbrae, Calif. where he was on the varsity tennis team. In 1972, Jack received his Master of Music degree from Bowling Green State University in Ohio. In Greensboro, Jack became an Assistant Professor in the UNC Greensboro School of Music from 1972 to 2008. While there, he performed with the 'Eastwind 'Quintet, with whom he toured in Guam , and 'Market Street Brass,' with whom he toured Europe and China. Jack was on the faculty at Brevard Music Center in Brevard, N.C. for eleven summers, and also spent five summers in Saginaw, Mich., where he performed with The Eddy Band.

Jack loved trains and antique cars. He was a member of the General Greene Car Club here in Greensboro, where he made lasting friends. As a former Marine, Jack was a devoted member of the 260th detachment of the Marine Corps League in Greensboro.

Those left to cherish his memory are his wife of 56 years, Gayle Gene Anderson Masarie; daughters, Heidi Beth Masarie Laufer and husband, Kiry Aliyah Laufer and their daughter, Adina Rae Laufer, of Topsail Beach, N.C. and Susannah Louise Masarie of Guthrie, Okla. Jack was a dear friend and colleague. I have many fond memories of our time together at UNCG in the late 1970s. I´ve thought about Jack many times over the passing years, always with deepest appreciation for his talent, warmth, humor and commitment to his students. Farewell, old friend.

I am deeply sorry to hear of Jack's death. He was my colleague on the UNCG Music faculty, in the Market Street Brass, and in the Greensboro Symphony. I will remember his wonderful playing as well as his sense of humor and witty puns.

I have enjoyed reminiscing back on the UNCG days and fondly remembering "Uncle Jack" as we called him. Thoughts and prayers for the days and months ahead.

My sympathy to the family. Jack Masarie made a huge impact in my life as a teacher in school (horn) and a fellow musician many years at First Lutheran Church for special services (Market Street Brass). A favorite memory in school was accompanying his horn students and attending their lessons! Fly high now.
