James Kim Obituary

James Youngchull Kim

February 15, 1969 - May 4, 2025

It is with profound sadness that we share the passing of James Youngchull Kim, 56, of Greensboro, N.C. on May 4, 2025 surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Manhattan, N.Y. on February 15, 1969, to Dr. Kyung Hyun Kim and Mrs. Ae Rim Kim. James was a devoted and loving son, husband, father, and brother.

He was a dedicated and skilled doctor and friend to all. He worked as a provider in healthcare for 30+ years. His commitment to his patients was evident in the many awards he won and recognitions he received. Many of his patients counted on being able to reach him any time of day or night and his willingness to go the extra mile. He will be remembered for his smiling face, his laugh, his joy, and his boundless energy.

Aside from his work James was an avid golfer. Whether it be watching or playing, one could always engage him in discussions about golf. He celebrated achieving a hole in one while playing with his daughters. He also enjoyed swimming and running. James started swimming as a child in New York and continued to swim through college. He picked up running in middle school and always said he would have been a better athlete if he only did one sport, but he couldn't choose which one to focus on. Later in life he picked up skiing again. He loved teaching the girls to ski and spent several seasons going to different ski resorts.

He also loved music and enjoyed singing along with his favorite songs. James was also very proud of his family. He enjoyed celebrating all his daughters' achievements. They were his pride and joy. From horse shows to golfing to academics, he was always there for the big moments in the girls' lives. He also enjoyed spending time catching up with friends over dinner and even better after playing golf.

James is preceded in death by his beloved father, Kyung Hyun Kim.

He is survived by his wife, Jennifer; daughters, Audrey and Courtney; mother, Ae Rim; brother, William; sister in-law Jen Jen; and nieces, Riley and Kenzie. A private memorial service will be held on May 8, 2025.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made in his memory to his brother's research laboratory (William Y. Kim Lab) at UNC Lineberger, at the following link https://give.unc.edu/tribute/jkim or by mail to UNC Health Foundation, c/o Kara Raynor, 123 W. Franklin Street, Suite 510, Chapel Hill, NC 27516.

We thank all the doctors and nurses at UNC who took care of James throughout his journey.

May James be forever remembered and cherished in the hearts of those who loved him. May he rest in peace and find joy in the arms of the Lord. He will be deeply missed.

I just today found out about Dr. Kim's passing. My husband and I were two of his patients. He was a wonderful, caring doctor and we were saddened when he left our practice. He was always so happy and so very caring. He will be missed by all her knew him. Rest in peace Dr. Kim.

Dr Kim was one of a kind. He took care of my father in his declining days as if he was his own father. Then my mother. I called him on a Friday night and he was at her home within an hour in stoneville NC. May his rewards be many and his blessings even more. My parents loved you Dr. Kim. Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Dr Kim has such a calm presence about him. He took time with his patients and actually listened to what they had to say. He was the best doctor ever. May he rest in peace.

Dr. Kim's casual demeanor coupled with his thorough and insightful medical care always made me feel at ease. He never seemed rushed. He would sometimes call me at home to report results. Our appointments often included discussions of extraneous matters, such as golf or the economy. His passing is a loss not only to his patients and his family, but also to our wonderful Greensboro medical community.

He was a wonderful Doctor - always taking time to hear your concerns without rushing. I will miss him and still have not found a replacement that comes close.

I'm so saddened by this news. Dr. Kim was an amazing doctor who showed great compassion for his patients. When he received notice of my suspicious mammogram, he called me after hours to let me know that we were "in it" together. Fortunately, it wasn't breast cancer, but his message meant so much to me. I hope his family knows how much he meant to his "patient family". Peace and prayers for all who he knew him.
