GREENSBORO Mr. John Council Rainey, Sr., 97, went to be with his Lord on Monday, October 24, 2016.A 2 p.m. funeral service will be held Saturday, October 29, 2016 at Forbis and Dick North Elm Street Chapel. The family will receive friends prior to the service from 12 until 2 p.m. at the funeral home, and other times at the home of daughter, Dianne Slate. Burial will take place at Westminster Gardens.John was born in Salisbury, NC on May 3, 1919, son of the late Walter G. and Mary Purdy Rainey. He was a devoted church member of West Market Street United Methodist Church for 85 years. He was employed by Greyhound Bus Lines for over 40 years and was a Mason and member of Revolution Lodge #552 for 50 years. John was preceded in death by his wife of 70 years, Ruby Ray Rainey. He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Walter P. and B. W. Rainey. He is survived by his son, J. C. Rainey, Jr. (Libby), of Lancaster, SC, as well as a daughter, Dianne Slate (Jr.), of Greensboro. Also surviving are grandchildren, Terri Motsinger, Jeff Rainey, Lynn Griffin, John Slate and Ray Rainey, in addition to nine great-grandchildren and a special friend, Libby Lynch.Online condolences may be made at www.forbisanddick.com.The family requests that memorial donations be made to Hospice and Palliative Care of Greensboro, 2500 Summit Avenue, Greensboro, NC, 27405, or West Market Street United Methodist Church, Senior Ministries, 302 West Market Street, Greensboro, NC, 27401.Forbis and Dick North Elm Street Chapel is assisting the Rainey family.
