Kay Overstreet Arthur

GREENSBORO Kay Overstreet Arthur passed away Friday morning at Well Spring. A celebration of life and resurrection will be held at 11:00 a.m., Tuesday, May 23, 2017, at W. Market Street United Methodist Church. The family will visit with friends following the service in the Church Gathering Space. Mrs. Arthur was born in Roanoke, Virginia on July 11, 1937, to T.G. and Trixie Overstreet. She has one younger sister, Carol. Kay's father was a retail manager and officer with Ellis Stone, now Macy's, and her mother was a housewife. When Kay was 7 years old, the family moved from Roanoke to Greensboro. She had a pet cat that disappeared shortly after they moved. He was presumed lost, but about 6 weeks later, showed up at their former home in Roanoke! Kay graduated from Greensboro Sr. High School and attended Woman's College (UNC-G) and St. Mary's. She actually met her husband, R.B. Arthur, at Lindley Junior High School. They started dating in high school and were married on June 24, 1956, at West Market Street United Methodist Church. They recently celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary. The newlywed couple soon moved to Raleigh where R.B. was in school at N.C. State. Kay's first job was at Monroe Calculating and Machine in Raleigh. Showing the team spirit, she would later be so well known for, she helped put R.B. through college. Kay and R.B. have two children; Tommy and his wife Teresa; and Mary Anna and her wife Debbie Roberts-Arthur. They also have one granddaughter, Keri and her fianc? Charles Terrell; sister, Carol Zimmerman and her husband Jack; and sister-in-law Mary Henrie French. The family enjoyed vacations at the beach house in Garden City Beach, SC. Kay also traveled to Europe with the family where they saw 7 countries in 15 days, and R.B. recalls several trips with the Wolfpack Club to see N.C. State play football bowl games. They also remember how both Tommy and Mary Anna were recognized as being Most Athletic during their senior year in high school. Kay had been a member of West Market Street United Methodist Church for 68 years. She had been very active in many different areas of the church, and also many community organizations. She had been on 25 mission trips to countries including Guatemala, Trinidad, Honduras, Brazil, Costa Rica and also Bay Saint Louis, Mississippi after Hurricane Katrina devastated the area. At church, she had served on the Administrative Board, president of The United Methodist Women, Finance Committee, and Mission Building Teams and was Co-organizer of Friendship Class, of which she was president several times. She was an accountant for Medical Management Services, an honorary life member of Greensboro Junior Woman's Club, member of Ladies Bridge Club, treasurer of Greensboro Symphony Guild, the Blandwood Guild, and was a volunteer at Hospice of Greensboro, NC Children's Home Society, and was involved in Cub Scouts and Girl Scouts. A close friend of Kay's wrote this about her: "Kay is an unusual person in that she does a job without any concern as to 'who gets the credit.' She loves her family, loves her church, and cares for her fellow man. I truly feel that Kay Arthur has raised the levels of fellowship, spiritual growth, and missions in West Market Street Methodist Church." If desired memorials in memory of Kay may be sent to W.
