Mary Grubb Obituary

Grubb, Mary Elizabeth "Libby"

April 25, 1948 - January 28, 2021

Mary Elizabeth (Libby) Whitsett Grubb passed away in the company of her children on January 28, 2021 at the age of 72. She was deeply loved and will be deeply missed. Libby was born in Whitsett, NC on April 25, 1948 where she attended elementary school and junior high. Her parents thought it was important for her to experience big city life so she made the trek to Greensboro daily to attend and graduate from Page High School. Then it was off to UNC-Chapel Hill where she earned a degree in medical technology.

She married the love of her life (Gene) on December 30, 1972 and was dedicated to caring for their home and family over the last 49 years. She was the most amazing wife and mother, she always had time and energy for nurturing her family. Libby will be remembered as a spectacular cook whose caramel cakes will be sorely missed. Libby was a gifted artist, who enjoyed taking art workshops throughout her life. She was a true craftsperson who appreciated antiques and original works. She selflessly shared her hand made creations with close family and friends and her paintings will continue to be cherished in their homes. Libby was a focused athlete who spent many hours improving her game and developing friendships on the tennis courts. She won several GCC championships over the years. She more recently became a student of golf and enjoyed playing with her husband and friends when her children left home. Even as a novice, she mentored Gene and her friends, offering keen tips to improve their swings. She had a genuine love for animals. She raised Collies, cats, ducks, and a horse, and spent time volunteering at the animal shelter from which she adopted several dogs. Libby was most at peace when she was digging in the dirt tending to her plants and flowers. Her gardens were inspiring homes to birds, butterflies and fairies. They made beautiful settings for family portraits, and her daughter's wedding once upon a time.

Libby was happiest spending time and sharing her love of art and living things with her two children and five grandchildren. Time with Nana was a most coveted gift and memories of baking and creating will be treasured. Libby loved visiting her mountain home in West Jefferson and beach vacations with her family. She enjoyed traveling, and especially relished her trips to France with her husband and friends.

Libby was preceded in death by her parents Joe and Millicent Whitsett, and her brother, Joey Whitsett. She is survived by her husband Gene, sister Joanne (Jay) Mintz of Advance, brother Danny (Bonnie)Whitsett of Whitsett, sister-in-law Marcy Lang of Durham, brother-in-law Ronnie (Kim) Grubb of Greenville, daughter Erin (Tod) Heesch of Fort Worth, son Kevin Grubb of Greensboro, grandchildren Sophie, Mirabella, Jaxen, Evelyn, and Gigi-Lynn, and many nieces and nephews.

A family memorial in her blooming gardens is planned for spring. The family wishes to thank her community of friends for their support and prayers, especially during her fight with cancer. Also, special thanks to Maura Barber and Authoracare Hospice for their loving care. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Authoracare Hospice, 2500 Summit Avenue, Greensboro 27405.

Libby was such a joy - scampering around the tennis court, poney tails flying. She was a gentle soul with a great competitive spirit, who often said she preferred her garden and family to all else. I will miss you, Libby.

Wonderful Obit tribute to Libby-such a beautiful person. She was one of God´s stewards of the land. We cherish the turtle tracks she painted on our beach house living room wall under the wood carved laugerhead. Libby and LIsa are our special Angels watching over us. We dearly miss our special ladies.
