Nathan was a 2018 graduate of Eastern Guilford High School, where he was an honor student and played tennis. He briefly attended UNC-Greensboro before being diagnosed with cancer, beginning a two-year struggle with the disease. He planned to major in biology because he loved everything about nature.

Nathan was a member of Mount Pleasant United Methodist Church. He was also a member of Boy Scout Troop 208, where his leaders affectionately called him "Wild Man." He enjoyed many camping trips with the troop, going hiking, canoeing, biking, etc. Nathan also loved to travel and was fortunate enough to make trips with his family to visit the Rocky Mountains in Colorado, the rainforests in Washington State, to see the Pacific Ocean sea stacks and walk among the giant sequoia trees in California. Of course, he also loved the mountains and beaches of North Carolina.

Nathan enjoyed watching Carolina Panthers games, playing board games, and playing video games. His favorite video games included Minecraft, the Pokémon series, and all things Mario Brothers. He especially enjoyed outracing everyone at Mario Kart.

Nathan was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ollie Ray and Lettie King Phipps, and Daniel Timothy Jr. and Barbara Whichard Ward.

He is survived by his parents, Jeffrey and Benita Phipps; his brother Jason Daniel Phipps; aunts and uncles, Miley and Greg Gang, Kathy and Jimmy White, Russell Phipps, Dannie Ward and Sherry Robison, Celeste and David Wood; cousins Pilar Pees and husband Philip, Evan Wood, Hayden Wood, Gracie Phipps, Austin Pees, Samantha Pees, and Landon Pees.

I cannot imagine what you all must be going through. I pray Nathan is free from pain, I didn't know him but in listening to his dad talk about him, I know Nathan fought hard. I pray God's peace, comfort and strength to you all during this time.
