Richard Phillips Obituary
June 21, 1925 - November 29, 2020
Richard L. "Dick" Phillips, age 95 formerly of 3955 Bittle Road, Gibsonville, NC died on November 29, 2020 in Maplewood MN.
A Memorial service will be held at 12:00, July 15, 2023 at Holy Trinity Episcopal Church, in Greensboro NC.
He was born on June 21st, 1925 in Des Moines, Iowa, son of Lynn Irwin and Ruby Cain Phillips and raised on a farm near Pleasantville, Iowa. After service in the navy, he graduated from Iowa State University, then in 1975 earned a Masters from North Carolina State University. He was a dedicated soil conservationist, serving 35 years with the US Soil Conservation Service. After "retiring" from his first job, he worked briefly for the University of Maryland, then the Guilford County Planning Dept., and last for NC A&T State University in the Bioenvironmental Engineering program. He was also a registered PE in four states.
He loved the land, the farms, and farm ways. He worked diligently with SCS to develop new soil erosion control methods, and ways to mitigate agricultural pollutants. His second love was teaching, thus he always enjoyed working with students.
He is survived by his wife Judy, son David and wife of White Bear Lake , MN, son Timothy and his wife of Plano, TX, and grandchildren Teresa, Lisa, Heather, Justine, and Brandon, and six great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his son Douglas, and sister Shirley Ann Bolie.
