Ronald Hundley Obituary

Hundley, Sr., Ronald Lee

October 10, 1943 - January 17, 2022

Ronald Lee Hundley, Sr., 78, went to be with the Lord January 17, 2022.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Friday, January 21, 2022, at Bethlehem United Methodist Church with Rev. Nina Miller officiating. Burial will follow at Evergreen Memory Gardens. The family will receive friends on Thursday evening at Wilkerson Funeral Home from 6 to 8 p.m and other times at the home of his daughter, Lee Ann Anders.

Ronnie was born October 10, 1943 to the late Rubin Benjamin "Benny" and Georgia Handy Hundley. He was a 1962 graduate of Wentworth High School, where, upon graduating from Appalachian State University, he returned, serving many years as a high school math teacher, girls basketball coach, and vice principal. Teaching was his heart and calling in this life. In 1977, he became a full-time rural letter carrier for the Reidsville Post Office, where he enjoyed working and made many lifelong friends. After retiring with 25 years of service, he then returned to teaching, working a short time at Reidsville Senior High School and later at Rockingham Community College. Nearly every time he went out, someone would come by to say "Hey, Mr. Hundley!" His family would then get to hear stories of how proud he was of his students.

Ronnie was a devoted Christian. He modeled the example that Jesus set before us to be a servant to others. He had a love for people, never met a stranger, and once he knew you, you quickly became a friend for life. He was a member of Bethlehem United Methodist Church where he had attended since his childhood. He served as a lay minister and Sunday School teacher, sang in the choir, served many years on the Board of Directors, and loved attending the annual conferences at Lake Junaluska. He could always be found at any church function and until his health failed, he spent many hours visiting the sick and those that were no longer able to attend services. He loved his church and his church family.

His family spent many, many hours listening to his "tales," as he called them. Tales from his childhood, from the many years spent farming with his brother R.B. and his father-in-law Robbie Jones; tales from his college days at ASU and from years spent coaching girls high-school basketball; tales of how proud he was of his wife, his children and his grandchildren, and tales of the many wonderful friendships he had made through the years. We will miss those tales.

Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his sister Linda Miller and his two best friends, Ronald McCollum, Sr. and Richard Greenlaw.

Left to cherish his memory are his loving wife of 53 years, Barbara "Bobbie" Jones Hundley; children Lee Ann Anders and husband Kevin, Ronald L. Hundley, Jr. and wife Sally, Kenneth Hundley and wife Angela; grandchildren Jacob Anders and wife Haley, Sarah Hundley and Ronald L Hundley III (Cub); brothers Rubin (R.B.) Hundley and wife Hazel, Milton Hundley and wife Linda; sister Rowena Shinault; brother-in-law, David Miller; his loyal four-legged friend, Buddy, and a large extended family.

We would like to thank the staff at DaVita Kidney Care for the care they provided over the past 3 years as well as the ICU staff at Annie Penn Hospital, and Dr. Courage Emokpae for the compassionate care they have shown to our family.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 1891 Bethlehem Church Rd., Reidsville, NC 27320.

So shocked to see Ronald's obituary...used to see him at Mom's Kitchen on occasion and at any service or event that I might attend at Bethlehem UMC. Ron was a few years ahead of me at Wentworth School, so I have known him for years. The obituary was on point describing his life and I know he has already heard these words as he entered the presence of the Lord, "Well done, good and faithful servant..." Our sympathy to all the family, friends and neighbors.

Mr Hundley was my very favorite math teacher at Wentworth High School. He was a very caring teacher, and his smile was contagious. I recently ran into him and his wife at a restaurant, and he was still the same caring man that I remembered. My deepest condolences go out to his wife, family and friends, as I know he will be sorely missed.
