Alton Shirley Obituary

Alton Wylie Shirley, 81, of 103 Woodgreen Way, Greenville, S.C., formerly of Powell St., Seneca, S.C., died Monday, April 25, 2005, at the Richard M. Campbell Veterans Nursing Home in Anderson, S.C.

He was born in Newry, S.C., June 7, 1923, and was the son of the late Arnold Wylie and Sudie Estelle Allen Shirley. He was also preceded in death by three brothers, Ray Shirley, William Shirley, and Marvin Shirley; and a sister, Pauline S. Taylor.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Navy, serving during World War II. He was also retired from J.P. Stevens, Utica Mill, in Seneca, S.C., after 35 years of service, a member of Utica Baptist Church and former Deacon, Seneca Masonic Lodge #185, Charles McGee Byrd Post #120 of the American Legion and Little League Coach.

He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Doris Alexander Shirley of the home; a son, Patrick and wife, Sangita Shirley; and grandsons, Adam and Neal Shirley, all of Greenville, S.C.; sisters, Ellen Long, Barbara Chambers of Seneca, S.C., and Arvilla Blackwell of Westminster, S.C.; and a brother, Charles Shirley of Franklin, Ind.

Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, April 28, 2005, at 2 p.m. at Utica Baptist Church, with the Rev. Crawford Keese officiating, and burial to follow in the Oconee Memorial Park with Military Honors.

The family will receive friends this evening, April 27, 2005, from 6 to 8 p.m. at the Brown-Oglesby Funeral Home of Seneca, S.C.

The family requests that memorials be made to the Utica Baptist Church, 4056 Wells Highway, Seneca, SC 29678.

Brown-Oglesby Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
