Brittany Langley Lawson
- - 1982-2021
Born on October 29, 1982 to Dr. Jerry C. Langley and Sandy S. Langley, Brittany arrived three weeks early, exhibiting an eager zest for life. As a child, she loved to dance, play with her friends and cousins, and eat strawberries and her grandmother's collard greens.
She attended Greenville High School, where she was a cheerleader and an excellent student. Brittany loved to learn, and was an intrinsically nurturing person. After graduating from GHS, she attended Clemson University and discovered a passion for nursing - a natural fit for her caregiving nature. After earning a Bachelor of Science in Nursing, she worked for Bon Secours St. Francis Hospital in their Cardiac Intensive Care Unit for 14 years. She took pride in the compassionate care she provided to thousands of patients and their families, who were undoubtedly blessed by her calm, steady, and reassuring spirit.
In 2013, she met her next-door neighbor, Dr. Scott Lawson, who became the love of her life. They married on May 14, 2016 and enjoyed travelling the world together before welcoming their son, Harrison, in 2017, and daughter, Hampton, in 2019.
As a mother, Brittany was in her element. She approached motherhood with characteristic purpose: she was highly disciplined with her self-care while pregnant, studied different childrearing programs and philosophies, and created a home environment in which her children could learn and thrive. She was intentional in developing a well-rounded weekly schedule that included trips to Conestee and Cleveland parks, the Greenville Zoo, The Children's Museum, and Paris Mountain. She loved sharing the outdoors with her children, and reveled in time spent with them, sitting on park benches, enjoying a picnic or snack. She never took the preciousness and gift of that time for granted. Brittany understood, to paraphrase the writer Robert Breault, that those seemingly little moments were actually life's biggest. Many of these outings included the family's cherished Goldendoodle, Chloe, who passed away alongside her.
On matters relating to pregnancy and childrearing, Brittany was both a wealth of information and inspiration for her family and friends. Through motherhood, Brittany discovered that she enjoyed teaching, and had recently begun serving as a Clinical Nursing Instructor at Clemson/Prisma Health.
Brittany was a beautiful, shining light whose love of life attracted many friends. Many of these long-lasting friendships began when she was a young child, and are a testament to her loyalty and authenticity. She was an empathetic and uplifting friend who generously shared in the joys and heartaches experienced by those she loved. She was creative, pragmatic, and had an infectious sense of humor - sharing life with her was fun!
Brittany found great joy in time spent with family, and she cherished her relationships with her parents, her brother, and his family. This was evidenced by their decisions to live within walking distance of each other, and in the time they consistently spent together.
In recent months, she exhibited an exceptional radiance. Brittany was blessed with a devoted and doting husband, two beautiful children, family and friends who loved her, and a fulfilling career. She was in the midst of a beautiful phase of life.
Brittany is survived by her husband, Dr. Scott Lawson, and their beloved children, Harrison Scott Lawson and Hampton Alexandra Lawson; parents, Dr. Jerry C. Langley and Sandy S. Langley; brother and sister-in-law, Spencer D. Langley and Kristina G. Langley; mother-in-law, Elizabeth Lawson, sister -in-law and brother-in-law, Kelley Sanders and Paul Sanders; nieces Ashley Pettus and Surett M. Langley, and nephew, Groves D. Langley; and aunts, uncles, cousins, co-workers, and friends.
The family wishes to thank the first responders and law enforcement officials who have shared their expertise and time, and the greater community, whose overwhelming generosity has brought much-needed peace and hope.
The family will receive friends at 1PM on Thursday, June 3, with a funeral service to follow at 2PM at First Baptist Greenville.
The family has plans to create special places in Brittany's honor where people can sit, gather together, and revel in the joy of life, as Brittany so often did. The Brittany Langley Lawson Memorial Fund has been established with the Community Foundation of Greenville to help bring this vision, tentatively called "Brittany's Benches," to life.
