Caroline McCauley Obituary

Caroline Hartsell McCauley

Greenville - Caroline Hartsell McCauley died on June 23, 2021. She was predeceased by her husband, Bobby Joe McCauley. They were married in Travelers Rest, SC, at Enoree Baptist Church on August 26, 1955. She and Bob were lifelong residents of South Carolina, with brief stints in Tampa, Florida and Roswell, Georgia, associated with Bob's career with Ciba-Geigy Pharmaceuticals. She is survived by her daughter, Patricia McCauley Blumer of St. Helena, SC, and her husband, Robert J. Blumer, Jr. She is survived by two grandsons, Robert J. Blumer, III, of Los Angeles, CA, and his fiancé, Nina Jamil Lahham, and Hastings McCauley Blumer of Greenville, and his wife, Kristen Welch Blumer. She had two great-grandchildren - Berkeley Annabelle Blumer and Bear Hastings Blumer, both of Greenville.

She was born in Brevard, NC, on May 6, 1933, to the Reverend Paul Gamalial Hartsell and Fannie Bragg Hartsell. She was predeceased by her sister, Polly McKee Parker and brothers Dr. Harold M. Hartsell and Charles Kent Hartsell. She was a graduate of Abbeville High School where she was a cheerleader and choral musician. She was a graduate of Mars Hill College in Mars Hill, NC, and Furman University in Greenville, SC., where she earned Bachelor of Arts degrees and majored in music.

Her love of music led to a teaching career spanning decades and later volunteer conducting in many church settings. She taught high school choral music at Greenville High School, JL Mann High School and Laurens District 55 High School. Throughout her career her choral music students routinely won positions in the South Carolina Allstate Honors Chorus. She was instrumental in Allstate Honors Chorus auditions and the Singing Christmas Tree in Greenville. She also conducted high school honors choirs on the state level. She was a small but mighty figure in the classroom and the concert hall all the while ruling her singers with a firm but kind hand thus forming lasting relationships and now fond memories with former students across the state.

When asked, she cheerfully served as interim adult choir conductor at Clinton First Baptist Church and New Hope Baptist Church in Cross Anchor, SC.

She and Bob were active members of Taylors First Baptist Church. Caroline was the interim conductor of the Taylors First Baptist Church adult choir over 50 years ago. Decades later she found herself once again conducting some of those same people when she led the Taylors First Baptist Legacy Choir for three years. She is fondly remembered as a force who could elicit beautiful music from volunteer choristers all the while maintaining her kind demeanor and sense of humor. She and Bob were faithful church members and community participants. In later years they were diligent volunteers and contributors to the Greenville Salvation Army.

Caroline was an artist and enjoyed gardening. She was a generous hostess and a compassionate friend. Her kind demeanor and strong convictions have imprinted on family and friends as a roadmap by which to live a quietly full and generous life.

A service to celebrate her life will be led by longtime friend, Lindsay O'Rear and will be held in the chapel at Taylors First Baptist Church on Wednesday, June 30, at 2 o'clock.

My conductor skills, my passion for music, my insistence of smiling to show your joy while singing ALL we´re influenced by Mrs McCauley. She was contagious as a Musician, a teacher and an encouragement to each person she touched. She was and will ever more be my favorite teacher! Singing for Jesus now, no better choir to belong too.
Grieve for a season but celebrate the victory in a life well lived and anticipate a Homecoming Celebration like no other.
Somewhere, amidst her belongings, is a plaque of a poem I wrote for her and gave to her. She lit up and made this high school junior more determined to follow her path. I did, for 27 years as a Worship Leader and soloist. Thank you Caroline for changing my life for the better!

I´ve been sorting through my feelings after hearing about Mrs. McCauley´s passing.
How do you express the impact on your life of the person who filled your soul with the love of music? How do you pay homage to the force of nature that took a group of diverse students and taught them that they could use that diversity to create magic?
I remember one particular vocal warm-up ... Mrs. Harriette Brewington would play a low note on the piano and we each would concentrate on a note that, in our mind, would blend with the note played. Then as one we would each sing our note. The swell of voices that filled the room as we each sang our note sent chills up my spine every time. Some notes were harmonic, some were dissonant, but each note was our own. As we would crescendo, they would all blend into a glorious sound.
I think there may be a life lesson there that I did not see as a teenager. Each of us has a note in our soul that we should share with the world. There were no wrong notes in that exercise, each was important in creating an intricate tapestry of sound. In life, we should confidently sing our note knowing that it can blend with the notes of others around us to create a beautiful world.
Other than my parents, I can think of no one other than Mrs. McCauley and Mrs. Brewington who impacted my life so much. They taught me that the diversity of life is necessary to create beauty and to listen intently for other´s voices, even if you´re not singing the same note.
I hope that you are looking down today proud of all the seeds that you planted and watered. I hope you like the plants that we grew up to be. I´ve been sorting through my feelings after hearing about Mrs. McCauley´s passing.

How blessed we were to have Mrs. McCauley touch our lives!
In addition to Concert Choir and All State, I had the privilege of assisting her in the office. She also blessed me by attending my wedding. Such a lovely and thoughtful lady.

My heartfelt condolences to the family. Mrs McCauley was an inspiration to so many which in her case is an understatement. She took seeds of talent watered them with knowledge shined her sweet smile on them and cultivated them with her passion for music. I was a rosey cheeked shy boy trying to find my way and she pointed me to the tenor section where I indeed found my passion also. She demanded excellence and when it all came together she had a smile that lit the whole stage!! Anyone who knew her loved her. I know I did. God puts people in our lives for a reason and I'm thankful he put Mrs Caroline in ours. She will be missed and forever in our hearts!! Rest easy Mrs McCauley.

My soul doth magnify the Lord, she turned off the lights and we sang in the dark, she wanted us to really feel and know Him for ourselves. I will never forget how she pulled out of us potential we didn´t know we had. Well done good and faithful servant take your rest, I am sure God is saying! Mrs. McCauley was a wonderful soul, teacher, and mentor to so many of her students. She was passionate about her work, and was without a doubt a role model to so many of us, including myself. She always seen the best in everyone. Her passion and perfection of how a concert choir should sound was authentic. I visited her some years back at her home in Greer and I will forever be grateful that I had the honor of spending a few hours with her. That following Mothers Day, I gave out her phone number to some of our classmates so they could call and simply say happy Mother´s Day to her. She was precious to all of us. She was so humble, and kind. She was truly special.
Rest In Heaven Mrs. McCauley.

Dear Patty:
I met you long ago when you were a little girl and I was your Mama's student at Greenville Junior High in Chorus. She was both my teacher and my friend, and I've never forgotten how she blessed my life. I saw her at TFBC several years ago and had a nice chat with her. I grieve her loss with you and rejoice in her "promotion" to Heaven, Jesus, and your Daddy. Her obituary was beautifully written and told her life story well. Thank you for that. Peace, comfort, and blessings to you and your family.
