Born in Rockingham, NC, Charlie grew up in Newell and was the only child of Thomas Franklin and Grace Withers Templeton.

He was a 1964 graduate of Garringer High School, received his B.A. in 1970 from King College, and completed his M.A.T. in English Education from Converse College in 1971.

Charlie dedicated 43 years to the School District of Greenville County where he taught at Tanglewood Middle School, Travelers Rest High School and Eastside High School. During his career he was the resource for creative contributions for enriching student life. From sound and lighting to plays, musicals, beauty pageants and even movies on the field, his finger prints could be found. With his passion for teaching, he served as a Teacher Cadet teacher for 17 years in training young educators. Along with his wife, he received numerous honors as Teacher of the Year for both Travelers Rest High and Eastside High and state and local awards for volunteer services given to students and children.

He was a member for over twenty years at St. Giles Presbyterian Church where he served as a Ruling Elder, a youth advisor, Worship Committee chairman and member, and the audio visual coordinator.

His interests were wide and varied and he loved to share his knowledge of fountain pens and knives with friends. He was the family photographer at most gatherings and loved a good read throughout his life.

He is survived by his devoted wife of 42 years, Betty Goad Templeton, of the home; a cousin, Sandy Foster and husband Jim of Knoxville, TN; a special niece, Leslie Goad of Greenville; his goddaughters, Dr. Amanda Dove of Rogersville, TN and Ms. Amy Harmon of Birmingham, AL; his godson, Chris Harmon, and wife, Brittany, of Albuquerque, NM; nephews, David Osborne and wife, Jenny, of Sylva, NC, Jonathon Osborne of Bronx, NY; mother-in-law, Evelyn Goad of Greenville; brother-in-law, Bob Goad and wife, Nancy, of Greenville; sister-in-law, Carolyn Osborne and husband, Dan, of New Rochelle, N.Y.; and many dear teaching colleagues and friends.

Mrs. Templeton, I met you while substituting at Riverside High (around 1993). We talked briefly and I introduced myself as a former student of your husband. Mr. Templeton was an energetic teacher and had a passion for teaching; he made it a fun class. I enjoyed going to my English class at Tanglewood Middle. My prayers are you with during this time of bereavement. May your heart be filled with wonderful memories of joyful times together celebrating a life well lived.
Peace & Blessings,

Betty, I just want to express my sympathy to you. My friendship with Charlie goes way back to Newell Elementary school. Actually then Newell went to the ninth grade. I had classes with Charlie from fourth to ninth grade. Charles Dad was principal while I was there and his Mother taught my brother ( Vinny). She was a wonderful teacher and person ! I recall seeing Charles visit, occasionally while I attended UNC Greensboro. Many fond memories will remain. May the Lord give you His abundant peace .
Sincerely,
Betty Cardinal Hough

Mr. Templeton was my English teacher my first year at EHS and my Teacher Cadet teacher my senior year. He was always supportive of every student who came into his classroom and interested to see students' differing points of view. The impact that he made on the Greenville community can be seen everywhere. As I near the end of my path to graduating college, I will remember his influence on my human understanding and will carry his passion for education with me. I am so saddened to hear of his passing, but he is a man who will be remembered in his students' hearts forever.

I first met Charlie in 1990 when he was coach of Travelers Rest's Academic Bowl team while I was on Riverside's Academic Bowl Team. Charlie was a good coach, leading that team to the runner-up position in the county championship. I also got to know him when he was one of the co-coaches for the county Academic Bowl All-Stars which I was a member of. He was a good man, Betty. God be with you and your family during this time.
