James Lazar Jr.

Funeral Services for Dr. James Tarlton Lazar, Jr., 83, will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, September 14, 2006, at Bush River Memorial Gardens Mausoleum Chapel, officiated by the Rev. Mary Green-Kearse of Shandon United Methodist Church and the Rev. Julian H. Lazar. Entombment will follow the service. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service in the Chapel Mausoleum.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Clemson University Student Scholarship Fund, G-08 Sikes Hall, Clemson, SC 29634.

Dr. Lazar passed away September 10, 2006. Born October 24, 1922, in Whiteville, N.C., he was the son of the late James T. and Mary Alice Jordan Lazar. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II, where he fought in the Pacific Theatre of Operations, and retired with the rank of Captain from the U.S. Navy Reserve. Dr. Lazar was a Professor in the Department of Dairy Science at Clemson University, Clemson, SC, retiring after 35 years of service.

Dr. Lazar received his education in the public schools of Florence, S.C., and earned a B.S. degree from Clemson University. He received a Master's degree from Cornell University, Ithaca, N.Y. and a Ph.D. from North Carolina State University, Raleigh, N.C. Dr. Lazar received many honors during his career: Master Teacher Award, Dairy Hall of Fame, Distinguished Service Awards by the Dairy Association and the Dairy Science Club of Clemson. He was a member of Shandon United Methodist Church of Columbia, S.C., and a former member of Fort Hill Presbyterian Church, Clemson, S.C. Dr. Lazar was an active member of the Clemson University Alumni Association, American Legion Post 510, and the Retired Naval Officer's Association.

Dr. Lazar is survived by his wife, Lois Holland Lazar of West Columbia; stepchildren, Thomas Sloan McConnell, III of Columbia, Mary Agnes McConnell (Ed) Scupp of Mt. Pleasant, Budd (Dawn) McConnell of Columbia, Warren (Denise) Holland, William (Libby) Holland, Patrick, and Walter Holland, all of Columbia; sisters Kathleen Lazar Baskin of Bishopville, Dorothy Lazar Trible and Ethel Lazar Cherniss of California; brother, Rev. Julian H. (Shirley) Lazar of Columbia. He was predeceased by spouses, Josephine Stribling Lazar and Mary Darby McConnell Lazar; and sister, Alice Lazar Thompson.
