Dr. John Faircloth Park

John Park Obituary

Dr. John Faircloth Park, Cantor Emeritus of Congregation Temple Emanuel, of Kingston, N.Y., died Jan. 14, 2001, in New York. He was 70.

He was born in Greenville April 15, 1930, a son of the late John Andrew and Inez Faircloth Park. Dr. Park was a soloist in Greenville Boy's Choir from 4th grade.

He studied at Furman University, at the University of North Carolina, at the Cincinnati Conservatory of Music, at the Aspen Music College, and at Columbia University Teachers College. He received his Bachelor's and Master's Degrees from the University of North Carolina and his Doctorate Degree from Columbia.

His teaching experience included Virginia Intermont College, the University of Florida, the University of Georgia, and the University of North Carolina. In addition to Dr. Park's background as an educator, he has served as a tenor soloist and has given numerous professional concerts and recitals.

In 1963 Dr. Park moved to Kingston, N.Y., and joined the original faculty of Ulster County Community College. In 1968, he was appointed Chairman of the Humanities Division of the college.

As Cantor, Dr. Park led services and preached sermons in the absence of Rabbi Jonathan Eichhorn. He received the honor of Cantor Emeritus of Temple Emanuel in 1997.

Surviving are his sister, Inez Morgan of Atlanta, Ga.; one brother, Charles Park of Greenwood; and one niece, Karen Park of Boynton Beach, Fla.

Funeral services and burial will be held in Kingston, N.Y., today. Memorial contributions may be made to Temple Emanue, 243 Albany Ave., Kingston, NY 12401; or Ulster County College Foundation, Stone Ridge, NY 12484.

I meet John back in the early 1990's in Kingston, NY. One of the most thoughtful & understanding persons I ever had the pleasure of knowing. God rest his soul.
