Patricia Nettles Obituary
Mary Patricia Maguire Nettles died at her home in Salem, S.C., on July 16, 2004.
She was married for 37 years to Dr. William Carl Nettles Jr. She was born and reared in Shreveport, La., and was the daughter of the late John Buffington and Frances Isabelle Goode Maguire.
Pat earned degrees in math at the University of Texas in Austin and accounting at Louisiana State University. She was employed as a systems analyst at Standard Oil Co. of California in San Francisco, Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge as assistant director of the Computer Research Center and assistant comptroller of LSU. She also taught accounting at LSU and at Texas A&M University in College Station, Texas. She was also a bank vice president during the time she lived in College Station. In south Texas she returned to her first love of work - programming - as an analyst in the Student Financial Aid office at the University of Texas-Pan American and later a consultant for the Systems and Computer Technology Corp., which leased financial aid software used by universities all over the United States. In that job she traveled and worked at many of those colleges. She served students at Tri-County Technical College in Pendleton, S.C., as interim director of student financial aid. Pat was licensed to practice as a certified public accountant in Louisiana and in Texas.
Her volunteer work in Baton Rouge included the boards of the Junior League and the International Hospitality Foundation. In College Station she served on the board of the Brazos Valley Museum. As a life member of the Ex-Students Association of the University of Texas, she became involved with local groups, wherever she lived, serving several times on those local boards.
Needlework of various types was one passion. She enjoyed handwork with needle and thread and was a member of the Lake and Mountain Quilters and Quilters of South Carolina, the Brazos Valley Embroidery Guild, and the American Needlepoint Guild. She was a gourmet cook who was happy spending an entire day in the kitchen preparing food for family, friends or strangers. Through the years she enjoyed sailing with Bill on a Flying Dutchman on inland lakes and the fellowship of other sailors at the Pelican Yacht Club, the Brazos Sailing Club and the Keowee Sailing Club.
Pat was a member of First Baptist Church of Clemson, S.C.
In addition to her husband, Pat is survived by a brother, Dr. James Kimbro Maguire, of Roseville, Calif., and nieces and nephews, Dr. Michael Maguire of Chesterland, Ohio, Susan Maguire Hampton of Austin, Texas, Dr. Mason Gilfoil of Kingwood, Texas, Mary Buffingon Gilfoil of Denver, Colo., Terry Maguire Elzinga of Charlottsville, Va., Dr. James Kimbro Maguire Jr. of Knoxville, Tenn., and John Buffingtron Maguire II of Olive Branch, Miss. Also surviving are three grand-nieces and six grand-nephews. She was predeceased in death by a brother, John Buffington Maguire Jr., and a sister, Frances Maguire Gilfoil.
A memorial service will be held at the Clemson First Baptist Church at 3 p.m. Monday, July 19, 2004. The family will receive friends immediately following the service at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Hospice of the Foothills, 390 Keowee School Road, Seneca, SC 29672, or the charity of one's choice. Duckett-Robinson Funeral Home, Central Clemson Commons, Central, S.C., is assisting the family with the arrangements.
