Ralph Fedder Sarlin, age 82, of Liberty, husband of Shirley Honigman Sarlin, died May 14, 2007, at Countryside Village in Easley, S.C.
Born September 27, 1924, he was the son of the late Reuben and Ella Fedder Sarlin. Mr. Sarlin was an honor graduate of Liberty High School and an honor graduate of the University of North Carolina. He was a member of Phi Beta Kappa and Beta Gamma Sigma honorary Business Fraternity. Mr. Sarlin served in the Navy during World War II.
He operated Sarlin's Department Store for over 25 years and later was public accountant of Sarlin's Business Services. He was very active in both Liberty and Pickens County civic endeavors.
Mr. Sarlin was an active member of Beth Israel Synagogue serving as Treasurer for 17 years. He was past chairman of the Pickens County Planning & Development Commission, on the Advisory Board of Citizens and Southern Bank, a director of the Liberty Chamber of Commerce, and the Pickens County Country Club. For 18 years, he served as Patient Service Chairman of the Pickens County
American Cancer Society. He was a past director of the Pickens County Salvation Army and the Pickens County Council on Aging. He served as President of the Liberty Lions Club and was the Commander of the American Legion Post 67. Mr. Sarlin donated the land and the initial funds for the Liberty Library.
Surviving in addition to his wife of 60 years, are his son Dr. Milton Sarlin and wife, Sandy, of Marietta, Georgia; daughters, Rebecca Lou Alper and husband, Jonathan, of Heathrow, Florida, Janet Duncan and husband, Lewis, of Marietta, Georgia and Linda Chidsey and husband, David, of Highland Village, Texas; grandchildren Mitsi and Elana Sarlin, Eli, Gideon, and Moriah Alper, Miles and Hillary Duncan, and Matthew and Morgan Chidsey.
Mr. Sarlin was a devoted husband, father, and grandfather who loved people and his hometown of Liberty. His vibrant smile, charitable ways, and kindness to others will long be remembered.
The family is grateful to his caregiver and dear friend, Donna Chapman for her devoted care, the Hospice of the Upstate nurses: Beverly, Taz, Jennifer, Angie and Jessica and to the staff at Countryside Village.
Funeral services will be conducted by Dov Rubin on Thursday, May 17, 2007, at 11:30 a.m. at Beth Israel Synagogue with burial at Beth Israel Cemetery.
