Alberta Lennon Obituary

ALBERTA "BERTA" HOGAN LENNON

longtime Greenwich resident, passed away on Friday, January 18, 2008. She was 75 years old.

She is survived by her three children, Elizabeth Lennon (and her husband Michael Simon) of Brooklyn, NY, David Lennon of Dorchester, MA and James Lennon (and his wife Manka Lennon) of North White Plains, NY, and two grandchildren, Alexandra and Zachary Lennon-Simon. Also surviving are her five sisters and brothers, Nan Liberator of Bronx, NY and Burlington, VT, Arthur Hogan, Jr. of Burlington, VT, Joan Joyce of Lebanon, PA, John Hogan of Essex Junction, VT and Cathy Spaulding of Shelburne, VT, as well as numerous sisters- and brothers-in-law, nieces, nephews and their children.

Born on March 27, 1932 in Burlington, VT, Berta was a daughter of the late Alberta Danton Hogan and Arthur Rush Hogan, Sr. She spent her early years in Burlington, and for the rest of her life she loved to visit her childhood summer home in Burlington in order to spend time with her large extended family there. Berta graduated from Trinity College in Burlington in 1953, did graduate work at Fordham University in NY and taught English at Holy Cross Academy in Manhattan and at St. Mary's High School in Greenwich. In 1956, Berta married Francis X. Lennon, Jr. and the following year they moved to Greenwich, where they raised their three children.

Berta was an active Democrat, serving in a variety of roles including member of the Greenwich Democratic Women's Club, District 12 leader for the Democratic Town Committee, president of the Fairfield County Federation of Democratic Women and a director of the Connecticut Federation of Democratic Women. She was the Democratic candidate for state representative from the 150th Assembly district in 1986. Berta believed that the job of politics is to make justice possible for all people, and she worked tirelessly toward this goal.

Berta joined the Greenwich office of William Raveis Real Estate in 1987, where her hard work and attention to details were recognized during her many years as an award-winning realtor.

Throughout her life, Berta displayed passionately held convictions, an unshakable devotion to her family and great courage in the face of adversity, setting a powerful example to all those who knew her. Donations can be made in her memory to the Ricardo O'Gorman Garden and Center, 23 West 129th Street, New York, NY 10027.

Calling hours will be from 4:00 to 8:00 PM, on Friday, January 25, at the Fred D. Knapp & Son Funeral Home, 267 Greenwich Ave, Greenwich, CT. Funeral Mass will be at St. Catherine of Siena Church in Riverside, CT at 10:00 AM on Saturday, January 26. Another service will be held in Burlington, VT at a later date.

Whenever I think of Aunt Berta , two words come to mind, generosity, and indomitable. She truly exemplified these words, even as death approached. We love her and shall miss her.

My delightful and wonderful friend always fought the good fight. She gave to everyone and loved everyone. We shared so many good times and she will always remain my dearest friend.
