Andrew Vrtiak Obituary

Andrew Vrtiak
Andrew Joseph Vrtiak ("Andy") passed away peacefully on November 17, 2024, surrounded by his family.
Andy was born on March 10, 1939, in Port Chester, NY to Andrew John Vrtiak and Kathleen Drago Vrtiak. He is survived by his wife and high school sweetheart of 65 years, Judith Haas Vrtiak, his four children: Marina (Richard) Pennella, Matthew (Portia) Vrtiak, Dina (Bradley) Wallace, Kristen (Rocco) Rinzivillo, and his eleven grandchildren: Rachel (Benjamin), Maya (Austen), Jacob, Madison, Brady, Brooke, Riley, Bradley, Braden, Brody, and Ellie. He is also survived by his sister Kathleen Staby and his brother George Vrtiak.
As a lifelong Greenwich resident, Andy attended Greenwich High School where he made many good friendships which were maintained long after his graduation in 1957. He received his bachelor's degree from the University of Connecticut, a master's degree from Columbia University, and a sixth-year degree in administration from Fairfield University.
Andy began his teaching career at Eastern Junior High School in Greenwich. In 1967 he became part of the coaching staff of the Black Knights football team at Stamford High School, where he served as Head Coach and eventually became Athletic Director. Whenever Andy ran into his thousands of students after their graduation, they remarked that although he was tough when he had to be, he was always fair.
Andy learned to love boating and fishing from his dad, and later he took his friends and family for early morning fishing trips in his boat, The Black Knight.
Andy always had a deep love for reading and he was known for visiting Cos Cob Library at least twice a week. He could be spotted around town reading in his car between business appointments. Andy always looked forward to reading in his favorite vacation spots: Cape Cod and St. Martin.
In 1985, Andy started his own business along with his son, A. Vrtiak and Son Tree Business. He worked every day until his death.
Besides the love for his family and friends, Andy loved his God, Jehovah. As one of Jehovah's Witnesses, he loved to share the truths found in God's Word the Bible.
Andy will be remembered for his profound impact on his family, his students, and his community. Although Andy will be deeply missed, his hard work, faith, and love continue to inspire all who knew him.

Thanks, Coach, for your solid support and instruction as I embarked on my young man-hood at EJHS in the mid-60´s. You always put us first. I remember getting caught skipping school because it was the day after a football game and you called my house to see if I was OK. Lookin´ out for me & keeping me honest. May your memory be a blessing to your family.

To the entire Vyrtiak family, we are so saddened to hear of the passing of Andy. I coached football and taught with Andy at Stamford High for five years. He loved his players and worked extremely hard in all his duties at school. I especially enjoyed being on his boat when the blue fish were biting...even when I got seasick. Wonderful memories of a truly good man. May your memory be eternal my friend. Angelo and Sara Cocolis

Coach Vrtiak had a tremendous impact on me as a high school student and throughout my entire life. Coach was our JV football coach and wrestling coach at Stamford High in the mid/late sixties... He taught me so much more than athletic skills. He taught me how to respect and treat others and how to be fair yet firm when teaching/coaching...Coach and I along with many of our teammates remained close over the years.. Our memories and the lessons learned helped shape all of us. Coach Vrtiak always remembered me and my family as we faced some of life´s obstacles and for that we will be forever grateful. I am saddened with the loss of someone who was so important in my life and in the lives of so many others... I hope coach Vrtiak´s entire family find comfort in the love that so many of his former students and athletes have for him.. Brian Usher

To Andy's family and friends I send my deepest sympathy. He was a real personable man. I was lucky enough to work with Andy for parts of 3 years and 1 year with football at SHS. My time with Andy was always educational and personable. He will be sorely missed by tons of friends and anyone that was graced by his presence. Thanks for our time together Andy, although it was short it was fruitful.
