Lynch, Bernadette R.
Bernadette Rita Lynch, 94, formerly of Riverside, CT, died in West Hartford, CT, on January 19, after an extended illness. Born in New York City on August 20, 1919, she was the daughter of John and Florence Tierney Sweeney. Bernadette graduated from the College of Mount Saint Vincent, Class of 1940, and married Robert F. Lynch on January 15, 1944, after he returned from wartime service in the South Pacific. In the following years, they lived in Rhode Island, Ohio and Delaware before settling in Riverside. After her three children were of school age, Bernadette began her career as an elementary school teacher, first in Delaware and then at Saint Catherine of Siena School in Riverside. She received her Master of Arts in Education degree from the University of Bridgeport in 1972. A dedicated and creative teacher, she loved teaching and, after retiring in 1984, continued as a volunteer tutor. In the following years, she took great delight in meeting her former students and hearing about their lives since they left her classroom. Bernadette is survived by her three children Patricia Sincerbeaux (Richard), Locust Valley, NY; Robert (Robin), Riverdale, NY; and David (Mary Anne), West Hartford, CT; six grandchildren and her brother Col. John A. Sweeney (Ret.), Sea Girt, NJ. Burial will be at the Gate of Heaven Cemetery in Hawthorne, NY. Donations may be made in her memory to the College of Mount Saint Vincent, Development Office, 6301 Riverdale Avenue, Riverdale, NY 10471.

To the children of Bernadette: Your Mother will fondly be remembered by the Srs. Of the Presentation who taugt with her at St. Catherine of Siena School. She was a wonderful teacher and was so kind and helpful with all the children. I am sure she is reaping her reward for all she did for the children and her kindness to the faculty members.

Mrs Lynch helped me through a really hard time. My mom was in a really bad car accident when I was in fourth grade and I had a tough time. She really went out of her way to make sure I was ok. She even took me out to lunch. She was a great teacher and a wonderful person. She will be missed and is remembered.
