David Shaum Obituary

EMMITSBURG, MD The Rev. Dr. David W. Shaum, 90, died on Thursday, October 6, 2011, at the Gettysburg Hospital. Born October 21, 1920, in Taneytown, Md., he was the son of the late Francis E. and Helen Elizabeth (Wisotzkey) Shaum. Father Shaum graduated from Taneytown High School in 1938 and from Mount St. Mary's College in May, 1942. Immediately thereafter, he entered the Mount St. Mary's Seminary and was ordained a priest for the Archdiocese of Baltimore, on June 29, 1946, at the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Assumption of the BVM. Father Shaum received a Master of Art Degree in Education from Loyola College, Baltimore, in June 1954, a Master of Arts Degree in Music from the Catholic University of America in June 1956, and a Doctor of Philosophy Degree from the Catholic University of America in June 1961. He also completed Post-Doctoral study at Northwestern University, Eastman School of Music, and Indiana University. His assignments in the Archdiocese included St. Vincent de Paul Parish, Associate, 1946-50; St. Martin, Associate, 1950-52; St. John, Westminster, Associate, 1952-55; and Mount St. Mary's Seminary and University, Faculty, 1955-95. Rev. Dr. Shaum retired from a distinguished career at Mount St. Mary's spanning four decades serving as Secretary of the College Council, Treasurer of the College, Academic Dean, Chairman of the Fine Arts Department, and Chairman of the Education Department. The musical traditions he created during his tenure at the Mount as Director of the Glee Club and College Choir were reknown throughout the region. He leaves a rich legacy in the hearts and minds of the Mount community of Christmas Candlelight Concerts, delightful spring concerts, and all the other festive events, not to mention the annual tours to all corners of the Western World. Father Shaum's College singers sang at a Papal Audience in St. Peter's Basilica before Pope John Paul II and a crowd of six thousand in 1990. He was described as a "model gentleman priest." President Thomas H. Powell of the Mount said, "We have lost a giant of Mount St. Mary's." Having just past his 65th anniversary as a priest, Fr. Shaum was the 2007 recipient of the Archdiocesan Medal of Honor for his many years of service to the church and the community. He was nominated in 2010 for the title of Monsignor and in 2011 as Outstanding Parish Holy Name Spiritual Director. Following his retirement, he continued as one of the busiest retired priests, as well as the oldest priest in the Archdiocese, filling in throughout the year to celebrate mass at his home and native parish of St. Joseph in Taneytown, Libertytown, Hagerstown, Thurmont, and Emmitsburg parishes. Additionally, he served as Chaplain for the Knights of Columbus Council of St. Anthony Shrine, Emmitsburg, and Our Lady of Mt. Carmel, Thurmont. Father's favorite antiphon: "We do well to sing to Your name, Most High, and proclaim your mercy at daybreak." Surviving are brother, Joseph B. Shaum and wife, Betty of Westminster, Md.; niece, Helen Rebecca Rugemer and husband, Max of Oakton, Va.; nephew, Michael B. Shaum and wife, Lori of North Carolina; and great-niece, Melissa Shaum. Also surviving are a host of former students and friends. He was predeceased by a sister, Mary Donatelli, and brother, Frank Shaum. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday, October 12, 2011, at the Chapel of the Immaculate Conception at Mount St. Mary's University, 16300 Old Emmitsburg Road, Emmitsburg, with His Excellency, Archbishop Edwin F. O'Brien, as celebrant. Interment will follow in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Taneytown. Friends may call at a viewing on Tuesday, from 1 to 8 p.m. at the St. Bernard Chapel at Mount St. Mary's Seminary, where Rosary prayers will begin at 7 p.m., and on Wednesday from 10 to 11 a.m. prior to Mass. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made in memory of Father Shaum to "Mount St. Mary's University" for either the Chorale or Needy Seminarian Fund c/o: Mount St. Mary's University, Office of Advancement, 16300 Old Emmitsburg Road, Emmitsburg, MD 21727. As a child growing up on the family farm near MSM, I watched Fr. Shaum walk by for many years, reading from his Bible, stopping just long enough to extend greetings, then continuing out of sight. Then as a Teacher to me in both High School and College I found him to be challenging, interesting, sincere and dedicated. He was also an occasional visitor to our home for Dinner and my Mother adored him. Rest in Peace my friend and thank you for the memories.

"Well done, good and faithful servant: because thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will place thee over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy lord. " Matthew 25:23

These are the words of the famous office chant for confessors, from the liber usualis that Fr. David owned for most of his life as a cherished possession.

Fr. David was an especially distinguished, holy, honest, brilliant, unique, complex, joyful, humourous and unforgettable person. He led a culturally and spiritually rich life.

Besides being a gifted teacher of thousands, like Pope Benedict, Fr. David was one of the few priests in the archdiocese of Baltimore to successfully keep living and breathing the traditional catholic ethos and authentic orthodox liturgical renewal in the post-vat II era. Whatever had been most timeless, vibrant and holy in the past continued to remain so in anything he taught, advice he gave or mass celebrated by him.

Fr David, though he did not indulge himself greatly, was also amongst the finest connoisseurs of quality pastries and raisin bread that Emmitsburg or Taneytown possessed.

I will remember him always. May his memory be eternal.

So sad to hear that Father Shaum has passed away. He truely was a wonderful priest and such a talented musical director, his concerts were the best! Sometimes he would fill in at St. Aloysius in Littlestown and I always enjoyed his sermons. One time at the 7AM Sunday mass he felt we were praying the Lord's Prayer too fast and he said," now we will pray this beautiful prayer over again & SLOWLY this time." I loved it!!! God bless you, Father Shaum.

Fr Shaum will be missed by so many at St Vincent's in Hanover PA. It was my great priviledge to have been in the Vincentaires whom he directed with such expertise. I learned so much from him in such a brief time. His beautiful, booming voice will forever be in my memory. His homilies were always inspiring. May God grant him eternal rest and let perpetual light shine upon him. We were blessed just knowing him.

Fr Shaum, a happy memory of Father teaching us to enunciate our words at St Vincents back in the sixties, meaningful homilies. Most important is comforting our family at it's most darkest hour at the death of my young nephew in 1997. Father shared the parable of the lost sheep, which I will not forget. The compassion he showed us, and the reminder of the love that Jesus has for all of us, the lost and the forgotten. The music in heaven is rejoicing with his presence. My thoughts and prayers to his family and friends.

I remember Dave as a student at Mount St. Mary's. I was in the naval group there and he was a seminarian. A friendship began and while separated by distance, it continued. When he was at St. Vincent's I used to go there and help with liturgies. I have many find memories of him as organist and friend while at the Mount. I would be at his side as he played for services turning the music score pages.

My mother and grandmother, Jean Japzon and Hazel Luckenbaugh, were long time friends of Father Shaum. His mother didn't have any daughters so Father Shaum's mother doted on my mother. Father Shaum even taught my grandmother piano lessons in the 1940's. Father Shaum attended the funeral of my grandmother who died (aged 96) in March 2010. He will be missed.
