Earle Cote Obituary

Dr. Earle Fleming Cote
Dr. Earle Fleming Cote died peacefully on January 16, 2024, at home in Miami, FL.
Born in Bridgeport, CT on December 2, 1928, Earle was the son of George and Gertrude Cote. Earle attended Fairfield College Preparatory School, and he was part of the first four-year graduating class in 1946. He graduated from St. Bonaventure College with a BS in 1950, earned his DDS from Georgetown in 1954, and graduated from Columbia's Orthodontic Program in 1958.
As many "Georgetown boys" did, Earle married a "Trinity girl", Mary Jane Schwab Cote, and they celebrated 63 years of marriage prior to her passing in 2019.
Earle is survived by his son, Guy Matthew Cote and his husband, Gilberto Rodriguez, and his daughter, Danielle Cote Loomis and her husband, Steve Loomis, and grandson, Leighton Loomis. Survivors in Earle's immediate family also include his sister, Marilyn Cote Savard.
Earle began his orthodontic practice in Greenwich, CT in 1957. He was active in the country and state, becoming President of the Greenwich Dental Association in the '70s, President of the Northeaster Society of Orthodontists in the '80s, and then joined the College of Diplomats for the American Board of Orthodontists, where he then became President of the American Association of Orthodontists in the '90s. He is most proud of his helping grow the participation of boarded orthodontists from 17% to 25% in the US/Canada during his leadership.
Earle retired from orthodontics in 1998. He remained very close to his dedicated and tenured team, catching up and celebrating milestones and memories on multiple occasions each year, going virtual when he moved to Florida in 2023.
Earle was very active in Greenwich, serving on the board for St. Michael's Roman Catholic Church, the Stanwich Club, and the YMCA, where he regularly ran and lifted weights before heading to his office on Dearfield Drive. Golf was his passion, from caddying early-on at Brooklawn to playing with the Musketeers and regional tournaments.
Many of Earle's friends and family would classify him as the "toughest yet kindest" man they know. We will miss his bowties and colorful blazers; he often was applauded for being best dressed. He certainly enjoyed a microphone in the front of the room. And he would hope we'd all raise a glass or two of wine in the spirit of celebrating 95 brilliant years of a life well-lived.

Our sincere condolences to Guy and Danielle. Your Dad, Dr. Cote, was always fun and witty and as you noted impeccably dressed! My Dad, Dr Slagle, was a good friend and my mom, Nancy, also a good friend of your mom. We hope the care from others and the memories help you through the tough times dealing with your loss. I came across this while trying to reconnect my mom with Danielle and would welcome a reply so we may connect.

Guy & Danielle, so sorry for your loss. Your parents were wonderful people, great neighbors and friends with my parents. Dr. Cote was also our family orthodontist. I remember riding my bike down by the triangle as he came home from work. He would often stop and have me bite for him so he could see how his handiwork was progressing. Just a wonderful friendly and kind man. I know you have many special memories of both your Mom and Dad to treasure.

Danielle,

My condolences to you and Guy and families. He's was one of the greats!!! I met him my very first day at Stanwich in May of '72 when I caddied for his partner Dr Walter Reiss in the member/member. Got to play lots of golf with him over the years, as our memberships overlapped by close to 4 decades. A true gentleman! Barb and I send our thoughts and prayers.

Like others, I have such vivid memories of going to Dr. Cote's office in the 1970s. WCBS on the radio, the fun staff...it was simply the best place to be if you needed braces.

He was quite a man I worked for him for 40 yrs and considered him a dear friend. Many people in Greenwich still sport the "COTE" smile. RIP my friend

Having worked for "DOC" as we affectionately called him, for 16 years, I will miss my visits with him in recent years while he enjoyed residents & a plethora of classes & activities at The Atria in Darien. His birthday each Dec., was a highlight. He loved increasing the education of his staff with trips to orthodontic conventions where he generously wined & dined us taking in musicals & other entertainment. "Doc" would be a `hard act to follow!´

Earle was my first boss in Greenwich, Ct. I stayed in that office well after he sold it, a total of 39 years. We stayed friends, and I saw him soften as he learned his life lessons. He got sweeter as the years past and still loved a party. Cheers to you Doc, thank you for spending your time on earth with me. Pray for us as we will pray for you. Sending love to your family, Patty Fisher

I remember him as my orthodontist..100 years ago! The gorilla I sat on in his office and Sharon with whom I still speak with on occasion. My top teeth are still as straight as when he did them! May he rest in Peace !
