Foulk, Elizabeth
Elizabeth "Betty" Weed Foulk of Greenwich, CT died peacefully at home after a long illness on February 11, 2015. She was 77.
Mrs. Foulk was the daughter of Joseph J. Weed and Ruth Pederson Weed of Larchmont, NY and Palm Beach, FL. She attended Rye Country Day School, Choate Rosemary Hall, and Wheaton College. In 2012 Betty was inducted into the Choate Rosemary Athletics Hall of Fame for her horseback riding, sailing and field hockey achievements.
Mrs. Foulk was a competitive horseback rider and sailor from an early age. In the 1960s and 1970s she won numerous sailing regattas. Representing Indian Harbor Yacht Club, she won four Western Long Island Sound and three regional women's championships. In 1967 Betty won the Mrs. Charles Francis Adams Cup, the North American women's sailing championship. Soon afterwards she was named the Rolex Yachtswoman of the Year.
In Greenwich, Betty was a member of The Greenwich Riding and Trails Association, where she was a longtime board member, and the Junior League.
Later, Mrs. Foulk developed a new interest. She was elected a member of the Green Fingers Garden Club and served as chair of two of their biennial flower shows and then club president. Betty became a National Horticulture Judge for the Garden Club of America. She had the honor of serving at the Boston, Philadelphia and many other wonderful flower shows.
Betty was a longtime volunteer and chairperson of the Greenwich chapter of Pegasus Therapeutic Riding, a horseback riding program for handicapped individuals with chapters in Fairfield and Westchester counties. She also served as president of Pegasus for two separate terms. In 2012 she was honored by the North American Riding for the Handicapped Association. as "Region 1 Volunteer of the Year" for New England and eastern Canada.
Mrs. Foulk will be remembered for her grace, dignity, patience, loyalty and sense of fairness.
She is survived by her husband Bill; her son and daughter in law, William and Julia; her son Timothy; her siblings Joseph and John Weed; and by her beloved horse, Bay Sailor.
