Evelyn Cernier Wienski
Evelyn Cernier Wienski, a lifelong Stamford resident, passed away on the evening of Sunday, January 13, 2019 after a long illness with her family at her side. She was born August 15, 1938 to the late Rudolph and Mary (Aulenti) Cernier.
Evelyn attended Holy Name School and Sacred Heart Academy in Stamford. After high school, she attended Chestnut Hill College in Pennsylvania, and the University of Connecticut. She was married to John C. Wienski in 1963. After working for a few years in insurance, Evelyn turned her interests to her home and family.
Evelyn was active at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, volunteering at several events over the years, participating in Bible Study, and tutoring at the parochial school. Evelyn had a beautiful singing voice which could be heard above many others at the weekly masses. She was an active member of the Stamford Yacht Club, where she played on the Ladies' Tennis and Paddle Tennis Teams for many years. She also was a member of the Shippan Point Garden Club. Later in life, she took up golf, and enjoyed playing in the women's group at Sterling Farms in Stamford. She also enjoyed art and art history, and dabbled in painting watercolors. She was an avid New York Giants fan, and attended games as long as her health permitted. Most of all, she enjoyed time with her family, especially babysitting her grandchildren.
Evelyn is survived by her daughter Karyn Wienski Calcano and husband Lawrence of Greenwich, and her three grandchildren Kendall, Tucker and Cameron. She is also survived by her sister Doris Chiappetta and husband Frank of Weeki Wachee, FL, her brother Thomas Cernier of Cave Creek, Arizona, and her sister-in-law Joan Jaworowski of New Canaan. Evelyn is also survived two aunts, Rosalyn Arena and Isabelle Broder, and several cousins, nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband of 28 years, John Wienski, her brother-in-laws Edward Wienski, Jr. and Stanley Jaworowski, as well as her mother-in-law and father-in-law, Nellie and Edward Wienski, Sr.
Friends and relatives may call on the family on Thursday, January 24th from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. at Bosak Funeral Home, 453 Shippan Avenue, in Stamford. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Friday, January 25th at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church, 1200 Shippan Avenue, in Stamford. The interment will immediately follow mass at St. John R.C. Cemetery in Darien.
The family would like to thank the private nurses and Nathaniel Witherell staff who cared for Evelyn in her last twelve years for their kindness and compassion.
