Gary Kahn Obituary

GARY KAHN, a regional business leader who helped to build a major accounting firm in Rockland County, while participating in the growth of a successful real estate enterprise, died Friday at White Plains Hospital. He was 64 years old. According to the family the cause of death was a brain tumor. Mr. Kahn began his career as senior tax specialist at Deloitte Touche (Haskins & Sells). In 1974, he joined the faculty at William Paterson College while building a practice as a sole practitioner. The growth of his practice forced him to leave teaching, and in 1979 he founded Gary Kahn & Co., offering clients an expanded array of services. The firm, known later as Kahn Hoffman and Hochman (KH&H) LLP grew to become the largest accounting firm in Rockland County serving clients throughout Rockland, Westchester, New York and New Jersey. KH&H recently merged with Rosen Seymour Shapps Martin & Co. LLP of New York City. Over the years, Mr. Kahn proudly served as the managing partner and oversaw and supervised the remarkable growth of KH&H. He took special pride in his ability to focus on the needs of his clients setting a standard for the highest quality work and professionalism. This dedication to excellence became the foundation for the company's growth and success. Yet his desire to teach never abated and he served as the mentor for many young accountants who went on to have successful careers. Mr. Kahn also helped to bring the practice into the field of litigation support when he became accredited as a business valuator and expert witness. He testified in over 200 cases in which he was called on to render an opinion on the value of closely held businesses, professional practices and various forms of marital assets. Mr. Kahn also lent his passion and expertise to contribute to the phenomenal growth of Milbrook Properties, a New York based real estate enterprise. The company owns, develops and manages apartment houses and shopping malls in New York, New Jersey and Florida. Mr. Kahn is survived by his wife, Carol; daughters, Alissa, Gabrielle and Isabella; his son, Richard; and granddaughters, Julia and Olivia and grandson, Harris.

I remember Gary from many years ago when we both went to Camp Merrimont in the late 50's and early 60's. Gary was a very competitive softball pitcher and aggressive basketball player. We had some very unforgetable times together. Only sorry we never kept up with each other

For the relatively short time I have known Gary, I can only say wonderful things of this man. His financial achievements reflect only a part of how professionally successful Gary actually was.
One doesn't achieve his degree of success by accident.
Gary will be greatly missed and I am sorry that I didn't have the opportunity to know him better.
My deepest sympathy to his family.
