George Twine Obituary

GEORGE TWINE - a resident of Greenwich entered into eternal rest Sunday, March 26, 2006 at Nathaniel Witherall Health Center in Greenwich at the age of 87. Born February 26, 1919 in Washington, D.C., he was the son of the late Auqustus Twine and Florence Queen Twine, and the husband of Esther Gordon Twine of Greenwich, CT.

Mr. Twine was former Assistance Superintendent of Recreation, Town of Greenwich from 1961-1969. He was former President of Greenwich Branch NAACP. Also, he retired as an Investigator Manager for the State Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities.

In addition to his wife, other survivors include one son, George Twine, Jr., of Maine; four daughters, Esther Ray of Greenwich, CT, Samia Khair of Prospect Park, NJ, Rosalind Wilson of Bowie, MD and Thelma Mack of Richmond, VA; 14 grandchildren; and 4 great-grandchildren.

Predeceased by one brother, John Twine and two sisters, Louise Perry and Mary Singleton.

Calling hours are Thursday, March 30, 2006 from 6 to 8 PM at Bethel AME Church, 4244 Lake Avenue, Greenwich.

Funeral service will be Friday, March 31, 2006 at 11:00AM in the Church with Pastor Margaret Tyson officiating. Burial will be private.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to AME Building Fund.

Downer Funeral Home, Inc., 31 Stillwater Avenue is in charge of arrangements.

George was really a great leader in Greenwich during his time. A voice of restraint that brought many changes for the good of all in Greenwich. I knew him for many years and worked with him on many civic activities. He will be remembered by many!
