Michael Newberg Obituary

MICHAEL H. NEWBERG M.D., Ph.D. - died suddenly at home in Newton, MA on Nov. 22nd at the age of 42.

He was the beloved husband of Jennifer (Lee) Newberg, of Riverside, the loving father of Zoe and Grady Newberg, the devoted son of Dr. Marc and Ruth (Seewald) Newberg of Greenwich, and the dear brother of Deborah Newberg of Santa Fe, NM.

Michael grew up in Greenwich. He met his wife, Jen, at Greenwich High School from which they were both graduated in 1981. He received his B.A. and B.S. from Brown University and his M.D. and Ph.D from the University of Virginia. A member of the faculty of Harvard Medical School, his research at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center concentrated on the development of viral vaccines, with specific emphasis on the development of a vaccine for prevention and treatment of AIDS.

Michael and Jen delighted in their children. He shared with them his passionate zest for life, his enthusiasm for science, and his love of the Red Sox. His family and his many friends and colleagues appreciated his great sense of humor, his brilliance and his caring nature.

The funeral was held at the Levine Chapel in Brookline, MA on Nov. 25th. Rabbi Jodi Seewald, his cousin, officiated. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Doctors Without Borders USA, P.O. Box 1856, Merrifield VA 22116-8056 or a charity of your choice.

Marc and Ruth - Your sad news has reached our family. All of the Ghriskeys were so taken by your loss. I remember us talking about Michael and UVA. It must be terrible. But what a fine human being who gave so much and left so much. So much to be proud of. And he lives on in all of his family. My Father, brother and sisters all are thinking of you. Tim

Dear Ruth: When the politicians started telling us "they feel our pain" I never knew what they were

talking about, but when I read the obit in today's paper, I truly do.

Please accept my deepest condolences. And I hope the rest of the family is well. Most sincerely, Evelyn Fowler

Dear Jen, Zoe, Grady and the Newberg family. Words cannot express my grief over the loss of my friend and colleague, Mike. I still can't comprehend that he is no longer with us. I have worked along side with Mike for the last four years; during the last year, he shared the desk space next to mine. He was a man with so much life and joy. He made us laugh with funny stories about life and human nature. He was witty and sometimes silly...which helped alot of us grad students and post-docs cope with stressful times in the research lab. He was also great physician. Whenever I had a question about a family member's illness (there were many), he would go into "doctor mode" and help me understand the nature of my family's illnesses. He assured me that they would be okay, and was generous in offering his medical counsel whenever I needed it. He was a good friend and a good doctor indeed! I wish I had the chance to personally say goodbye but a preplanned Thanksgiving trip to Paris prevented me from attending the services. On Friday morning, I lit a vigil candle in front of the Virgin Mary statue at Notre Dame Cathedral. It was a small gesture for such a wonderfully loving husband, father, friend, colleague and dedicated physician. My thoughts and prayers are with the Newberg family always. My heart is so heavy and the tears still flow. It's been a week now and not a day has gone by where I haven't stopped to think about him, shed a tear, or let out a laugh over a funny memory. I will never forget my dear, sweet friend Mike. God Bless him always.
