Norman Hascoe Obituary

NORMAN HASCOE

the Founder and Chief Executive Officer of Hascoe Associates Inc., an investment firm in Greenwich, Connecticut, succumbed to cancer on Thursday, October 24, at the age of 78. He is survived by Suzanne, his wife of fifty-two years, his children, Stephanie and Mark, Lloyd and Abbe, Andrew and Stacey and his seven grandchildren. Beginning in 1957 he founded several companies, manufacturers of advanced materials and other high technology components for the semiconductor industry. These components and materials can be found in almost every computer, telecommunications equipment and other advanced electronic equipment on the market today. The largest of his companies, Semi-Alloys Inc., was sold to Allied Signal Company in 1983. Norman was the recipient of over 100 U.S. and foreign patents.

His education includes degrees in industrial engineering and mechanical engineering and he is also the recipient of an Honorary Doctor of Science degree from the University of Connecticut.

Reflecting his interest in technology, art and medicine, particularly genetic research, as well as public policy matters relating to national security, Norman has served on the Visiting Committee of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, is a trustee of New York University Medical Center and is on the board of The Whitehead Institute for Genetic Research at MIT, among other boards. A 27-year cancer survivor he was a major contributor to the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center's research on prostate cancer. President George W. Bush appointed him to the U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum Council in 2005. Norman is also the president of JINSA, The Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs, a Washington D.C.-based organization that provides leadership on issues affecting American national security and foreign policy.

The Hascoes have been patrons of the arts and art collectors generously sharing their passion nationally and internationally through exhibits, lecture series and catalogs. They have made donations and long-term loans to major museums here and abroad of artworks for special exhibitions and have funded the publication of important monographs by art historians. Their collections are eclectic, covering paintings, sculpture and antique furniture. Both Norman and his wife, Suzanne, have shown a side of their personalities that is unusually buoyant, cheerful and energetic in spirit, easily inspiring friendships and enjoying a great many warm relationships wherever they would find themselves, at home or in their considerable travels around the world. Norman has been described by friends as a genius and brilliant entrepreneur while at the same time humble, very loving, witty, generous and a great humanitarian.

Funeral services will be held at Temple Sholom, on Friday October 26, at 10:00AM. 300 E. Putnam Avenue, Greenwich, CT.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to MSKCC-Prostate Cancer Research, 1275 York Avenue, New York, NY 10021, Attention: Howard Scher, M.D., or JINSA, The Jewish Institute for National Security Affairs, 1779 Massachusetts Ave., NW Ð Suite 515, Washington, DC 20036, Attention: Mr. Thomas Neumann, or The Whitehead Institute, 9 Cambridge Center, Cambridge, MA 02142, Attention: Ms. Susan Whitehead.
