Priscilla Norman "Penny" Whitmore

Priscilla Whitmore Obituary

PRISCILLA "PENNY" NORMAN WHITMORE 70, of Greenwich died Saturday, August 9th at her home in Greenwich surrounded by family. She was a wonderful and loving wife and mother, a great friend to many and will be deeply missed. Born Priscilla Elizabeth Norman (P.E.N.) on December 21, 1937, in New York, NY, she was the daughter of the late Bradford Norman Jr. and Eleanor McKnight Pierce. Penny grew up in New York City and Newport, RI and was a graduate of Westover School, Bradford College and UNC-Chapel Hill. After a brief career in Boston, where she found much pleasure working at Children's Hospital, she travelled to the west coast, settling in San Francisco. There she met her husband of 44 years, George M. Whitmore Jr. "Dick". They returned east and settled in Greenwich in 1965. As an active member in the Greenwich community, she was passionately involved with Green Fingers Garden Club and volunteered countless hours at ARC of Greenwich, The Christ Church Bookstore, Bendheim Cancer Center, and Gateway Preschool. She was also a member of IBC New England, helping educate and council those who suffered from the disease that she battled for seven years. She was an inspiration to everyone in facing her illness with implacable courage and grace. Penny's husband Dick pre-deceased her in 2007. She is survived by a daughter and two sons and their spouses: Elizabeth (Laurie) Whitmore Lippincott and Kevin F. of Dallas, TX, George Norman Whitmore and Erin C. of Hingham, MA, Stephen Bradford Whitmore and Sasha Loffredo of San Antonio, TX, a brother, Bradford Norman III of Bethesda, MD and six grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Friday at 11 a.m. at First Presbyterian Church, 1 West Putnam Avenue. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Inflammatory Breast Cancer Research Foundation, 321 High School Rd. NE #149, Bainbridge Island, WA 98110

To Penny's family: My heart goes out to you in this time of sorrow. While I never met Penny 'face to face' we had a long-standing communication via phone and email dating back to her diagnosis in 2001. I always admired Penny's 'glass half full' attitude toward life. She was always there with a word of encouragement for others no matter her own circumstances. Penny will be sorely missed by her inflammatory breast cancer friends. May you each find strength, hope and peace to face the days ahead.

Dear Laurie:
Your Mom was an inspiration. Among her many contributions to the Greenwich community, she helped students like my my brother gain the skills and confidence needed to lead fully independent lives. For all the GARC families touched by Mrs. Whitmore's grit and generosity, I thank you.
Take care,
-Kate

I, like Gayla, feel like I have lost a friend. My connection goes one step further in that my name is also Penny and we both battled Inflammatory Breast Cancer. I was diagnosed a year after Penny and she helped me with my battle. I am so sorry for your loss and will keep Penny and all of you in my prayers, as I do all my IBC family.

I am so saddened to hear of Penny's death. She was diagnosed with ibc shortly after I was and we were on the online support lists together. I feel like I have lost a good friend, even though I never met her personally. My prayer is that you, her family, will be comforted by God as you learn to live you lives without her. I am so sorry that you have lost Penny.

Laurie, George and Stephen,
Sarah notified Phil and me of your mother's death. We are in England and unable to attend the memorial service on Friday. We shall be thinking of you all - and Skip - and want you to know that you are in our prayers. Penny was a shining example to all of us of the spirit of living and giving. I am just so pleased she had those seven years to get to know and love her six grandchildren and for them to know and love her in return. I shall be in touch when we return next week. May the Peace of the Lord be with you all. Kathy (and Phil)
