STEVEN CORNELL Obituary

STEVEN HAJOS

CORNELL

1928 to 2013

Steven Cornell, an active member of the Unitarian Universalist Congregation, passed away Oct. 22, 2013, of natural causes. Steve was born Oct. 24, 1928 in Budapest, Hungary. He and his parents, Oscar and Elizabeth Hajos, moved to Paris, France, in 1930 before emigrating to the United States in 1941. Settling in Lansing, Mich., where his father was a portrait photographer, Steve graduated from high school. His premedical and medical training were at the University of Michigan. Following graduation in 1953, he went to Oakland, CA for his internship. After two years of service in the U.S. Air Force, he completed a residency in Radiology at the University of Iowa. Steve was then invited to join the faculty of the Stanford Medical School, where he taught for two years prior to returning to Iowa City, IA, where he worked for 30 years as a radiologist at the University Hospital and Clinics. During this time Steve authored over 60 scientific articles and one book on Radiology. He retired in 1994 and moved to Green Valley AZ, where he was an active hiker and volunteer for several organizations. He was most proud of the several years he spent as president of the Green Valley Forum. Steve was preceded in death by Mary Cornell, his wife of 30 years, and mother of their four daughters, Ann, Jean, Eileen and Catherine. Steve enjoyed Green Valley and the good friends he made there, especially Liliane Petersen and her family. Our family would like to thank the caring staff at Prestige Assisted Living for the sensitive care our father received during his stay there and before he became a hospice patient.

I am grateful that I got to know Steve, and that my family and I had the privilege of enjoying his company each time we came to visit Mom (Liliane) in Green Valley. He was a quiet man, kind and caring, Intelligent and curious. Steve will be missed by many, most especially his long time cherished friend, Liliane, whom he clearly held dear to his heart.
