News Death Notice
VAUGHAN, Dr. Andrew T. 87, passed away peacefully at his home in West Palm Beach on August 5, 2009. Born in West New York, New Jersey, he was the son of the late Mr. & Mrs. Thomas Vaughan. He graduated from Leonia High School and went on to St. Benedict Prep School. He attended Miami University of Ohio where he was a member of Delta Tau Delta fraternity and lettered in track, basketball, football and baseball. It was at Miami that he met his loving wife and lifelong traveling companion Doris Minton. In 1945 he graduated from Otterbein College in Westerville Ohio and then in 1958 he received his Doctorate in Education from Columbia University. Andrew had a lengthy career as an educator. He began as Professor of Education at Southern Illinois University in Carbondale, Illinois. It was there that he had NBA great Walt Frazier as a prized student. Andrew established the first television class program in the nation. He lectured extensively on the effects of the environment had on man. He took a sabbatical and traveled all throughout Europe and the Pacific lecturing on mans environment. He retired as the Dean of General Studies. He was an avid sports fan and especially loved to play golf. After spending many years as a part time Ohio and Florida residents he and Doris became permanent Floridians in 2008. He loved the water and all of the many things that the Florida weather had to offer. He leaves behind his wife Doris of 67 years, West Palm Beach; sister, Irma Elkas, Indiana; nephew, Tom Elkas, Indiana; niece, Margaret Bimson, Pennsylvania; niece, Elizabeth Caulkensof, Indiana; brother in law, David Minton, FL; sister in law, Julia M. Peters, Ohio; and many extended family members and friends. A Memorial Service will be held at 12 Noon on Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at Quattlebaum Funeral Home 1201 South Olive Avenue, West Palm Beach, FL 33401. The family will receive friends immediately after the service until 2:00 P.M. Interment services will be held at Greenwood Cemetery in Hamilton Ohio at a later date.
