Family-Placed Obituary


FLINTERMANN, Camilla Jane (Hewson) Age 84, died on February 18, 2007, at home surrounded by family. A Quaker Memorial Meeting for Worship will be held at 1:00 pm Sunday March 4, at The Knolls of Oxford's Auditorium. Born in Richmond Indiana, July 31, 1922, she was the only child of Cornell and Estelle Hewson. Camilla lived in Richmond, Indiana until 10 and then moved to Des Moines. She graduated from Theodore Roosevelt High School in 1939, at age 16. Before leaving for college Camilla served the American Friends Service Committee's project for refugees from Hitler's Germany. She continued as a staff member for fourteen months before enrolling in Earlham College. She graduated from Earlham with a degree in Sociology in 1944. She met Peter Flintermann at Earlham and married him on June 24, 1943. They lived in Cleveland, Ohio. Camilla worked with Family Service when Wendy Christine was adopted. When Peter joined the staff of Miami University in Oxford, Camilla worked part-time at mental Health Center in Richmond Indiana. Carroll Anne joined the family in 1959. Camilla worked at Family Service in Hamilton as a social worker from 1969 to her retirement in 1984. Camilla was active in Oxford Friends Meeting, NAACP, League of Women Voters, Oxford Citizens for Peace and Justice (OCPJ), Earlham College Alumni Association, Dream Group, and a variety of book groups. She founded the Parachute of Butler County. She created and managed three international list serves; CARE for caregivers of persons with Parkinson's, Quaker Women Discussion and Alternative List. She was a speaker for adoption groups and classes on Women's Issues, Aging and Care giving at M.U.. She received the Oxford Woman of the Year in 2003 and the Peace Bell from OCPJ. Camilla wrote poetry and was published numerous times in The American Friends Journal and the Friendly Woman Journal. Survivors include daughters W. Chris Scholl (Gary) and Carroll Phelps (Alex), grandchildren, Amanda and April Scholl and Travis Wright, a brother in law, Edward Flintermann of Pennsylvania; three nieces, many friends and colleagues. Memorial contributions in lieu of flowers may made either to the American Friends Service Committee, 915 S. Salem Ave. Dayton, Ohio 45406 or Parkinson's Alliance 211 College Road, E.
