LAIDLAW _ James Douglas 1910 - 2005 James Laidlaw, beloved husband of the late Edna (Hinman) Laidlaw, passed away at the Willow Creek Continuing Care Centre in Claresholm on Friday, April 8, 2005 at the age of 94 years. Many thanks to the staff at the Centre for their excellent care. He will be dearly missed by his sister Pat Lowick; nieces, Barbara Ward, Carol (Jim) Allen, Mim Laidlaw, Marj (Deck) Delaney, Florence (Jim) Walasco, Pat (Ron) Oughton, Mary Jean Furman, Hilary Furman, Lorna (Rulon) Meldrum, Sylvia (Bob) Pankhurst: nephews, Mr. and Mrs. Mike Brookes, Terry (Eileen) Brookes, Bob (Esther) Laidlaw, Murray (Diane) Lowick, Dave (Annette) Laidlaw, Hugh Laidlaw, Jim Whitbeck, Paul (Ann) Hinman, David (Grace) Hinman, Mark (Donna) Hinman; cousin Heather (Ralph) Laidlaw; numerous great and great-great-nieces and nephews and his beloved Tabby, Robinette. Jim was predeceased by his parents Alexander R. and Christianna Laidlaw, his wife, Edna and by his beloved Dalmation, Guizot. He was born in Ailsa Craig, Ontario on May 25, 1910, the fifth of six children. His merchant father moved the family to Strathmore in 1912, then to Okotoks, High River, Nanton and Calgary. Jim worked for several years in his brother Bill's store in Cardston. He then moved back to Nanton where he established an insurance business in an office at the back of the Laidlaw store. He and Edna married in 1941 and purchased the store from his mother. Jim had a life-long love of reading, stimulating conversation and music. Along with insurance, he served as Coroner, Magistrate, Justice of the Peace and Judge. He also sold Tip Top Tailor made-to-measure suits. He was a self-educated man who had read most of the one thousand six hundred plus volumes in his library. He studied a wide range of topics and enthusiastically wrote a weekly column for the Nanton News for twenty-five years. A Funeral Service will be held at the Nanton-Parkland United Church on Thursday, April 14 at 2:00 p.m. with Rob Moore officiating. An Interment Service will follow at Nanton Cemetery.
