Roger SOUTH Obituary
News Death Notice
SOUTH, Jr., Roger David died peacefully at the age of 57 surrounded by family and friends on July 20, 2014 after a long courageous battle with cancer. He was born in Middletown, OH on January 9, 1957 to Roger and Barbara (Piedel) South. David graduated from Bishop Fenwick High School in 1975 and joined the Middletown fire department at the age of 19. He led a successful career, rising to the rank of training captain at the time of his retirement. He continued to serve his community as a teacher's assistant in the City of Middletown public school system until the time of his death. David graciously donated his time and humor to many local charities including the United Way and the Knights of Columbus. Most importantly he made a lasting positive impact on innumerable individuals as an athletic coach at all levels of competition including his children's youth leagues and as a long time football coach for both Bishop Fenwick and Middletown high schools. He is preceded in death by his father, Roger D. South. He is survived by his wife, Julie (nee Long) South; sons, Christopher (Julie) South, and James (Sharon) South; grandchildren, Brooks, Alison, Rowan, and Rachel. He is also survived by his mother, Barbara (nee Piedel) South; brother, Paul (Sharon) South; and sister, Barbara Ann (Greg) Robertson. Mass of Christian Burial will be Tuesday, July 22, 2014 at 11:30 am at Holy Family Parish - St. John's Church, with Fr. Fathers John Civille and Ed Pratt celebrants. Visitation will be prior to the Mass from 9:00 am to 11:00 am at Wilson-Schramm-Spaulding Funeral Home, 3805 Roosevelt Blvd. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Middletown Firefighters IAAF Local 336, P.O. Box 324 Middletown, Oh 45042 or Bishop Fenwick High School 4855 St. Rt. 122, Franklin, OH 45005. Please sign the online guest book at WilsonSchrammSpaulding.com

What a bright light extinguished!
We feel so lucky to have visited with Dave & Julie at Wildwood this past March. Although many years had gone by since we last saw each other it was like no time had past at all!
Nothing but fond memories and lots's of laughs!

To the South Family, I was so sorry to hear about the passing of David. He was a wonderful man. I still have such great memories of David & many of the other guys from the class of 1975 in which my brother Jeff Hamilton was a part of, going to ball games & my mom would have to drive some of the players and so many other memories. Always keep the memories close to your hearts. All of you are in my thoughts & prayers

To all of the South family,
I used to love when I would ask David how Julie and the boys were. His entire face would light up, and with sincere love for his family, he would smile and update me on everyone. He was so proud of his boys. He so loved all of you, and it was an honor to work with him when I was at Amanda. The students and staff loved him! He was a true reflection of all of his family members. You are all in my prayers.

Saddened to learn of Dave's passing. Having moved away year's ago, I can still see Dave's vibrant smile and sense of humor like it was yesterday. Will always treasure the high school classmate/teammate memories.

David had a way of lighting up a room whenever he was there. He always had one liners and jokes to tell, and the best sense of humor! He will be missed, but his memory will live on. My deepest sympathy to Julie, the boys and their families.

I was deeply saddened to hear that my longtime classmate, since 1st grade, and teamate passed away. Dave always made me laugh and and always had a positive word to say no matter what. He will be missed and my thoughts and prayers go out to the family. Rest in peace my friend.

I am truly saddened to hear about Daves passing. Dave was an amazing man that was loved by so many in the Middletown school district. He always had a smile on his face and could brightened up a room when he entered. Our kids at Creekview adored him. My heart is with you Julie and the rest of the family. The world has lost a wonderful and kind man. Rest in Peace Dave, I will miss you. Until we meet again.....
