Peggy Dunn Obituary

Peggy Walsh Dunn left her earthly life January 12 at the age of 90 due to acute leukemia. Peggy, known by her family as Peppy, led an extraordinary and active life. A week before her sudden illness, she was still driving herself to her hairdresser. With boundless energy she certainly seized each day and will be dearly missed.

After spending her early years in Amite and graduating from Ponchatoula High School, she earned her Bachelor's degree at Southeastern in 1953. There she served as Editor of the yearbook, cheerleader, and President of her sorority Kappa Rho. Peggy was a retired educator of 32 years, during which time she received numerous awards including 2009 SLU Educator of the Year. She always considered her greatest professional achievement to be that of opening young minds to the joy of learning. She had unique ways of engaging both students and parents to which hundreds of birdhouses around Hammond will attest.

Peggy was an active member of the community serving several organizations including Options and Louisiana Special Olympics. She treasured her memberships in many local groups and was still active in the Hammond Round Table and Hammond Garden Club. In 1988 she was selected as JA Women of the Year. Peggy was an active congregant at St. Albert Catholic student center. She loved her Renew study group and made lifelong friends who brought her such joy in recent years. She practiced her faith daily and ended each night praying the Rosary.

More than anything she was devoted to her family. Peggy was married to Robert "Bob" Dunn for 63 years. Her love for Bob and the kids was obvious. She is survived by hers Sons Michael (Rebecca) and Pat, and her Daughter Karen (Scott), granddaughters Ashley (Ben), Robyn (Mike), Kelli (Aaron) and Bobbie, honorary grandson Hristo as well as great-grandchildren Amelia, Lily, Greyson, Luke, Spencer and family friend and caregiver Jackie.

Peggy was preceded in death by her parents Walter A. Walsh and Bessie Bickford Walsh her devoted husband Bob, and Daughters-in-law Rosa and Morgan.

Relatives and friends of the family are invited to attend a visitation from the chapel of Brandon G. Thompson Funeral Home, 12012 Hwy 190 W. Hammond, LA 70401, on Friday, January 20, 2023 from 5:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Visitation will continue on Saturday at St. Albert Catholic Student Center, 409 W Dakota St, Hammond, LA 70401, January 21, 2023 from 9:00 a.m. until the funeral mass at 11:00 a.m. Interment will follow in Greenlawn Cemetery.

Ms.Peggy will be greatly missed. She was such a wonderful loving person, who had such a charming personality. Everyone loved her. She would not pass you without saying "Hi" and always asking how your family was doing. She is dancing with her beloved Bob in Heaven. God Bless her and her family.

Please accept our deepest sympathies. Mrs. Peggy was a wonderful person and very well respected in the community. We always saw her as a GREAT southern lady, smiling, elegant and so helpful.
May she rest in peace.

I am so sorry to read of Mrs. Peggy´s passing. She was always a beautiful, kind lady, brimming with personality.
She was a classmate at Ponchatoula High with my late mother, Gloria Tucker Heitman, and my late mother-in-law, Regina Kugler Fletcher.
She served as maid of honor when Chip´s parents married.
To Mike, Pat, your sister, and the rest of your family, please accept my sincere sympathies.
Losing our parents is one of life´s most difficult experiences.
Love and prayers
