David D. Scharnhorst

David "Dave" Dean Scharnhorst, a man whose life was marked by creativity, selflessness, and a loving nature, passed away peacefully on September 16, 2025, in Center, MO.

A Memorial Service will be at 11:00 AM, Monday, September 22, 2025, at James O'Donnell Funeral Home in Hannibal, MO. Fr. Greg Meystrik will officiate. Private Burial will be at Calvary Cemetery in Quincy, IL.

Friends and Family are invited to Dave's Life Celebration at a visitation that will be from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, Monday, at the funeral home.

Born on December 16, 1952, in Quincy, IL, Dave was the cherished son of Merle Dean "Joe" Scharnhorst and Ruth Neumann Scharnhorst. His journey through life was one of passion, commitment, and joy, touching the lives of many with his warm spirit.

Dave's formative years were spent in the halls of Christian Brothers High School in Quincy, where he cultivated a foundation of knowledge and character that would guide him through his subsequent studies at Quincy University. His education was a testament to his dedication to personal growth and his pursuit of excellence.

In 1976, Dave married Valeria Hejnar in Chicago, IL. As time went on their paths later diverged. Love found Dave once more when he married Lisa Jean (Zinn) Murphy in 2015, on a beautiful day in New London, MO, in the home Dave built. Lisa's love, companionship and support remained steadfast until his final days.

Dave's life was further blessed with a loving family. He was a proud father to his three children, Matthew Scharnhorst (Carlee) of Quincy, IL, Jessica Roberts (Anthony) of Atlanta, GA, and Zachary Scharnhorst (Casey) of Quincy, IL. He found additional joy in being a stepfather to Trent Murphy (Lori Fowler), Alissa Coons (Jared), and Leah Dittmer (Chase). His brother, Doug Scharnhorst (Elizabeth), and sister, Dori Wolter (Mark), also survive him, sharing in the legacy of their family's bond. Dave's life was further enriched by his three grandchildren, Quentin, Violet, Jaxon, and four step-grandchildren, Madelyn, Camilla Rose, Julien, and Harlen, who will carry forward his spirit of adventure and kindness.

Professionally, Dave excelled as a Commercial Contractor for Rose Construction working with his dad and later channeled his talents into his role as a Foreman at Fischer Builders. His work ethic and leadership were admired by colleagues and clients alike, setting a standard of excellence in his field.

A devout Christian, Dave's faith illuminated his path and inspired his actions. He lived his beliefs through acts of kindness and a commitment to serving others. His interests painted the portrait of a man deeply in tune with the world around him. Dave loved Irish music and playing with the Rag Tag Irish Band, he mastered instruments like the guitar, octave mandolin, and bouzouki. Traveling to Ireland for his honeymoon with Lisa, is one of Dave's most treasured memories.

An outdoorsman at heart, Dave's younger years were spent bicycling - a passion that led him to own a bicycle shop. He was also an Eagle Scout, a testament to his love of nature and his drive to lead. His talents extended to the intricate art of model railroading, where his layouts and sets won numerous competitions for their detail and realism.

Dave's creativity flourished in his volunteer work with the Quincy Community Theater, where he applied his skills to building sets. His love for sports was evident in his unwavering support for the KC Chiefs and Green Bay Packers. Additionally, Dave's love for sailing led him to become certified to sail on Lake Superior, with his cousin, Mark, who was more like a brother.

In every aspect of his life, Dave was a compassionate soul, always ready to lend a hand and share his love. He was a man who created beauty, whether through music, craftsmanship, or simply through the way he lived his life. Dave will be deeply missed, but his legacy of love, creativity, and selflessness will continue to inspire those who knew him. As we bid farewell to David "Dave" Dean Scharnhorst, we celebrate a life beautifully lived and a heart that was truly a gift to us all.
