Ralph Waite

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Ralph Waite, who played the kind-and-steady patriarch of a tight-knit rural Southern family on the TV series "The Waltons," died Thursday, his manager said. He was 85.

Waite, who lived in the Palm Springs area, died at midday, manager Alan Mills said. Mills, who did not know the cause of death, said he was taken aback because Waite had been in good health and still working.

Waite appeared last year in episodes of the series "NCIS," in which he played the dad of star Mark Harmon's character. He also appeared in "Bones" and "Days of Our Lives."

"The Waltons," which aired on CBS from 1972 to 1981, starred Waite as John Walton, and Richard Thomas played his oldest son, John-Boy, an aspiring novelist. The gentle family drama was set in the Blue Ridge mountains of Virginia.

His co-stars on Thursday praised both the actor and the man.

"I am devastated to announce the loss of my precious 'papa' Walton, Ralph Waite," said Mary McDonough, who played daughter Erin Walton. "I loved him so much; I know he was so special to all of us. He was like a real father to me. Goodnight Daddy. I love you."

Michael Learned, who played wife Olivia Walton, said she was "devastated" by the death of "a good honest actor and a good honest man."

"He was my spiritual husband," Learned said in a statement. "We loved each other for over forty years. He died a working actor at the top of his game. He was a loving mentor to many and a role model to an entire generation."

The show, which followed the Waltons' triumphs and setbacks through the Great Depression and World War II, was narrated by its rich-voiced creator, Earl Hamner Jr., who based it on his family memories.

It was a TV rarity, a respectful depiction of Southern country life, and proved so popular that it overpowered its hit comedy competition, NBC's "The Flip Wilson Show."

Waite, a native of White Plains, N.Y., served in the U.S. Marines before earning a bachelor's degree from Bucknell University and a master's degree from Yale University Divinity School, according to a 2010 profile by The Desert Sun.

He became an ordained Presbyterian minister and then worked at a publishing house, the paper said, before falling under the spell of acting. Waite appeared on the stage before moving onto the big screen with roles in 1967's "Cool Hand Luke" and 1970's "Five Easy Pieces," in which he played the brother of Jack Nicholson's character.

Waite received an Emmy nomination for "The Waltons" and another for his performance in the ABC miniseries "Roots."

Waite's role as a steady TV dad in the CBS drama was in contrast to his personal life that was undercut by alcoholism, Waite told The Desert Sun.

"I was a caring, responsible father to all of these kids. But I was drinking the night before and being a drunk on the side," he said, adding, "I found a way to get sober."

In 1990, Waite ran unsuccessfully as the Democratic challenger to a four-term Republican incumbent for the congressional district that included Riverside, Palm Springs and Palm Desert, where Waite lived.

In 1998, he vied for the congressional seat left open after Republican Sony Bono, another performer who turned to politics, died in a skiing accident. Bono's widow, Mary, won the special election.

Dear Waite Family-We would like to offer our sincerest condolences on loss of a fine actor. We admired him in the Walton series on CBS as John Walton. In addition to his role in Roots as Mr. Slater.
He will be greatly missed by thousands , but we also know he is with our lord & savior as he shared some years ago his education at Yale University's Divinity School in which he later became a minister if only for a short time. RIP Mr. Waite.......

Ralph Waite and so many others who we have lost will always be remembered because of the realism they brought to their roles in many different situations. The Waltons were my family when I was far away from home half way around the world and also at home in the USA.On TV I could "visit" them every day which was a comfort. I still watch them every day and hope their stories will be watched by generations to come because of the good lessons that were taught. You are missed Ralph, and Grandpa, Grandma who have passed on. But part of your life still lives on the the family story called The Waltons!!!

What was expressed via TV was a loving concern for each other. Very little contention. Tranquility among their
busy family life. That's my view.

Ralph set a great example: a timeless
role as a husband,parent & father.

God Bless Ralph and the entire cast for
giving us the reality of family life.

Ralph Waite was cool, when it came to the walton s he made you wish that you were part of that family, and I definitely would rather live with a struggling tight family held together by a man like john Walton who was a man Ralph Waite not only brought to life but gave incredible depth and reality to. Not to mention some of his various other roles,he was even fun to watch as a nasty guy in his appearance in Charles Bronson's film ChatosLand,Ralph Waite you were cool and we can keep brining you home in your TV and movie roles god bless ya Ralph your one of many fans,Rob Pollard

A great actor who brought a fatherly warmth & love into our homes. No one could live up to 'Pa' Walton & he was brave & very honest to admit that, but I think that shows how much of the character was in the man & indeed in how well he portrayed him 'how much of the man was in the character!'
Rest in peace Ralph.... you will be dearly missed!

Sometimes the death of a loved one hurts so deep that it takes a long time to over come it. At my mothers funeral The hurt was so deep until the pastor said....God did not take your loved one away, He merely welcomed them home. Thank you Mr. Waite you were the dad to millions of us who watched the Waltons. May you rest within God's loving arms now and forever. Job very well done.

Thought you might like to see this link : http://www.purepeople.com/article/ralph-waite-mort-du-pere-de-gibbs-dans-ncis_a136555/1

It says : "Le monde est drôlement mauvais tel qu'il est sans que tu en rajoutes". Une phrase de "Jackson" que beaucoup de jeunes aujourd'hui en France devrait apprendre. Goodbye Jackson...you will always be an inspirational actor.

The French part quotes his NCIS saying that "The World is bad enough without you adding to it"...and goes on to say that many French youngsters should learn this adage and that Jackson (of course Ralph) will always be an inspirational actor.

Happy Memories...

Thank you so much for your wonderful portrayal of an Appalachian father who could do anything he set his mind to, a quintessential American, independent, innovative, kind-hearted and hard-working. Future generations take note and let Earl Hamner's characters and Ralph's, Will's, Michael's and Ellen's portrayals teach you how to live your lives. To Mr. Waite's family from a loyal Walton fan in Canada:
He is part of you always, but for us, the Walton family fans,
Mr. Waite brought honesty, realism, sincerity, humour, steadfastness, and strength to the Walton clan and to all of us who welcomed him into our homes every week. Every family needs a persona like John Walton, and all of us are grateful for the transparency and kindness that Ralph Waite added to the role. You would know his imperfections, and we can relay to you that his God must have loved him very much indeed to grant him so many talents and so many friends, and we all loved him just the way we saw him, and would have been pleased to know him as a friend apart from his acting if we had ever had that opportunity. If it is a true measure of a man in how much he is missed after he passes, then we hope it brings you, his family & friends comfort to know how great an actor and how good a man Mr. Waite surely was. "Good night, daddy" from your "other" family, who will never forget how special you were.

I was 10 when the Waltons began and I grew up watching the show, from the first episode to the last. My own family life was chaotic and we were not close. My father was away from home the vast majority of the time. I used to dream of being a Walton, and wished for John to be my father. I'm sure I'm not the only child of the era who felt that way. Mr. Waite was a good man, a good actor and will be missed. To his family, I wish you peace as you grieve the loss of your husband and father. Goodnight, Mr. Waite. Godspeed.
