Albert Calhoun Obituary

CALHOUN, Albert F., Jr. Albert F. Calhoun, Jr., 82, of Middletown, passed away Sunday, (June 7, 2009) surrounded by his loving family. He was the loving husband of Frances (Hogan) Calhoun for 51 years. He was born in Middletown on May 17, 1927; the son of the late Albert F., Sr. and Frances S. (Carlson) Calhoun and lived in Middletown all of his life. A graduate of Woodrow Wilson High School in 1945, he was very active in football, track, and basketball. An avid bowler and golfer, he was very proud of making two Hole-In-Ones during his retirement years. Al served in the U.S. Marine Corps at the end of World War II; May, 1945 to May, 1948. He also served with the Army Paratroopers of the 187th RCT in Korea from 1949 to 1953, as Regimental Radio Repair Chief. A graduate of Coyne Electrical School in Chicago, IL, he received a degree in TV repair. A supervisor at Raymond Engineering, Al assisted in development of various missile programs including Harpoon-Maverick and Pershing before retiring in 1989 after 20 years of service. Most of all, Al will be remembered as a devoted, loving, and caring husband, father and grandfather (Pop-Pop). Al enjoyed spending time with his children and grandchildren and was an avid follower of the Boston Red Sox and UCONN Basketball. He was much loved by his three children: daughters, Betsey Duplin of Middletown, Carol Clark and husband Michael of Manchester, and son Alan and wife Debbie of Bristol. Al also leaves his six cherished grandchildren: Jonathan Duplin, Jordan and Tyler Clark, and David, Amy and Jennifer Calhoun. Al was the oldest of eight children; four sisters, Lorraine Moffatt of Florida, Joan Rawlings and husband John of California, Florence Howell and husband David of Florida, and Ethel Konesky of New Hampshire; three brothers, Carl Calhoun of Middletown, Ed Calhoun and wife Carolyn of Granby, and George Calhoun and wife Janet of Middletown. He also leaves behind many beloved nieces and nephews. The family extends their deepest gratitude to the devoted staff of Middlesex Home Hospice and Middlesex Dialysis Center for their exceptional care to Al during his illness. Calling hours are Thursday, June 11, from 4-7 p.m. at Biega Funeral Home, 3 Silver St., Middletown followed by a service at 7 p.m. at the funeral home. Burial, with Military Honors, will be held in the State Veterans Cemetery at the convenience of the family. Memorial contributions may be sent to Middlesex Hospice Home Care, 28 Crescent Street, Middletown, CT 06457.
