Benjamin Cohen Obituary

COHEN, Benjamin, MD. Dr. Benjamin Cohen, much loved husband of Theresa (Beitzer) Cohen and longtime resident of West Hartford, died on Thursday (February 21, 2008) at the age of 90. The father of three children and eight grandchildren, he was Director of the Department of Anesthesia at Mount Sinai Hospital in Hartford from 1950 until the mid-1970s. After leaving Mt. Sinai, he joined the medical staff at Newington Children's Hosptial, where he worked until his retirement from the practice of medicine in 1981. Born in Schenectady, N.Y, Ben graduated from Union College in 1938 and Albany Medical College in 1942. He interned at Beth Israel Hospital in Newark, N.J. and was chief resident in anesthesia at Bellevue Hospital in New York City. He worked at Montefiore Hospital in the Bronx before moving to Connecticut. Ben was active in several state and national medical associations. He is survived by his three children, Bernard Cohen and his daughters, Celia and Abby; Richard Cohen, his wife, Meredith Vieira and their children, Benjamin, Gabriel and Lily; and Terrie Cohen (Burrows), her husband, James Burrows, and their children, Seth, Hannah and Eli. Ben was beloved by his family. He lived a long and happy life in spite of a chronic illness that never dampened his spirit, his strength or his ever-present wit. Services will be private. Donations in his name can be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Connecticut.

To Richard & Meredith And the Entire Cohen Family.

My deepest regrets. Your Dad/Husband gave me a never-ending chuckle or grimmace depending on his ascerbic remarks directed towards me. He will be sorely missed!
