Bernice Crim Obituary

Bernice Grimes Crim, a longtime resident of Glastonbury, passed away January 19, 2023, at the age of 97 surrounded by her family in Lake Oswego, Oregon. Bernie, as she was known by all, was born in Detroit and spent her childhood in Ann Arbor, Michigan. She attended the University of Michigan and married her college sweetheart before settling in Glastonbury in 1950, where they built their first house on Sunset Drive.

Bernie taught at several Glastonbury schools, including Eastbury, Naubuc, Buttonball, and Hebron Ave. schools as her children grew up. She enjoyed an active life of sailing, tennis, hiking and skiing, as well as extensive world travel. She was a longtime member of the Glastonbury Tennis Club and the Hartford Ski Club. She once climbed to Base Camp on Mt. Everest, and is the first member of the family to have skied down Tuckerman Ravine on Mt. Washington. Bernie enjoyed horseback riding, and in her retirement years took riding tours to Ireland and Mexico. She was known to some as the "Galloping Grandma".

Bernie is predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Hugh S. Crim, and is survived by her children and their spouses: Peter Crim and his wife Jann Lane, Catherine Crim, Gordon Crim and his wife Tavalyn Crim; by her eight grandchildren: Kathryn, Spencer and Torrey Crim, Jeffrey and Andrew Carlson, Courtney Spadaro, Stephanie Kelley and Tyler Crim; and by her four great-grandchildren: Addison, Emma and Isabelle Spadaro, and Jordan Kelley.

A private memorial service will be held at a later date. She will be interred in Essex, Connecticut, joining her mother and sister who predeceased her.

Bernie is a force to be reckoned; not to be restrained. She was a Master Gardener. She kept a tight ship. She was hyper-focused. She was always sharp as a tack.
