I took dance classes with Cheryl in the lead when I first came to CT. She was inspiring, talented and good humored. It helped that we shared a name. I enjoyed her spirit while she enjoyed this girl's years long serious interest in African dance. What a life- she created a beautiful legacy for so many people to enjoy. I have thought of her often and thanked her in my heart.

Cheryl Smith was the face of black Hartford. Her grace and charisma and her warm embrace of our African heritage were the standard that so many of our youth looked up to. Thank you for your light and energy. May your spirit live on and on.

I'm thinking back to the days when the Artists Collective began, over fifty years ago. Cheryl was in her early twenties then and her belief in the Collective's mission to serve the community and the arts was essential to its creation, and it never wavered in the challenging and glorious decades to follow. She was Jackie and Dollie's strong support and a mentor and mama to hundreds of kids. She was tender, dynamic, inspiring, full of laughter and generous of spirt, a gifted dancer and teacher. and a lovely person. Hers has been a life beautifully lived and we are all better people for having danced it with her.

Heartbroken is a gross understatement when thinking of Cheryl's passing and I wish I could afford to plant a forest of trees in her memory. We went back further in years more than most AC students have lived. In a world of superficiality, Cheryl was a beam of realness and light. I will miss her.

Cheryl, we hold in our hearts the memory of you teaching and mentoring so much more than dance and culture at the Westledge School in Simsbury, where you mentored our daughter Valerie . You later ushered her and many other young women through Yabo, the Yoruba Rite of Passage at the Artist Collective. It was and still is a beautiful cultural part of our lives. Thank you ! Dance in Paradise, your legacy lives on.
