Daniel Muirhead Obituary
Daniel Stewart Muirhead, 92, beloved husband of 60 years to Alice Muirhead, passed away peacefully with his family by his side on June 15, 2016. Born in Hartford on June, 15, 1924, the son of the late Neil Stewart and Dorothy (Donohue) Muirhead. He attended St. Thomas Seminary and received his Bachelor degree from St. Michael's College in 1950. Prior to attending college, Dan proudly served his country in World War II in the 491st AAA Battalion. He began working at the CT State Highway Department in 1950 and worked for many years as Director of Personnel. Dan was appointed Department of Transportation Deputy Commissioner of Administration in 1983 and served for eight years until his retirement. He was an avid golfer, having scored four holes-in-one and was a long-standing member of Indian Hill Country Club. He was additionally a great fan of the Boston Red Sox, New York Giants, and was a season ticket holder for the Hartford Whalers. Dan's greatest love was his family and life-long friends, who will cherish his memory and miss him dearly. Besides his wife, he is survived by his daughters, Debra Muirhead and Ellen (Anthony) Massa and three grandchildren who fondly know him as "Bika"; Tia, Anthony Daniel and Nicole Massa. He is also survived by his brother and sister- in-law Melvin and Shirley Schmidt, nieces Deborah Lawrence, Susan (Mark) Fenaughty, Sheryl (Donald) Smith and nephew David (Brenda) Schmidt. He was predeceased by his sister Ruth Alice Spring. His funeral will be celebrated on Thursday, June 23, at 9:00 AM from Duksa Family Funeral Homes at Newington Memorial, 20 Bonair Ave, Newington, CT with a 10:00 AM Liturgy of Christian Burial at Church of the Holy Spirit. He will be laid to rest privately with Military Honors. Relatives and Friends may call on Wednesday, June 22, from 4:00 until 7:00 PM at Newington Memorial. Contributions in his memory may be directed to the Lucy Robbins Wells Library, 95 Cedar Street, Newington, CT 06111 or to the Salvation Army, 855 Asylum Ave, Hartford, CT 06101. To those Dan has left behind, please accept my heartfelt sympathy in your time of sorrow. Dan was the Personnel Director when I was hired in 1978 to replace Ann Clark as a Personnel Officer in District One, Rocky Hill. He garnered respect from his personnel team and peers alike. An "atta girl!" from him for doing a good job really meant a lot. Dan was a great teacher, tough boss, and kind man. Rest in peace Mr. Muirhead.

My sincere condolences to the extended Muirhead family. Dan was a very honorable man and a great boss. I am thankful for having had the opportunity to work for him.
I was hired into Personnel (Human Resources) with CTDOT in August, 1979 and retired in 2009. When hired, Dan was Personnel Director and early on, was instrumental in my decision to stay with CTDOT. I have been forever thankful.
