MESSIER, Doreen (Johnson)

Doreen (Johnson) Messier, 72, of Berlin, passed away Monday (April 15, 2013), at the Hospital of Central CT in New Britain. Born in New Britain, daughter of the late Everett and Gladys (Johnson) Johnson, she lived in Madison and Jupiter, FL, moving to Berlin in 2008. Doreen was a graduate of New Britain High School Class of 1958, received her bachelors degree from Syracuse University in 1962 and went on to receive her Master from the University of Bridgeport. She was employed as an elementary school teacher in Killingworth for 32 years until her retirement in 2006. She later became a full time substitute teacher at Hubbard Elementary School in East Berlin from 2008 until 2012. Doreen was a member of First Lutheran Church in New Britain; was active in the Haddam Killingworth Education Association; and received the CIAC Award for Innovative Programs in the schools. Surviving is her son, Louis Messier of East Hampton; a brother, Darrell Johnson and his wife Donna of Holland, MA; a sister, Janet Schroeder of Berlin; several nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by a brother, Everett Johnson.
Funeral services will be held Friday, 11 a.m. at First Lutheran Church, 77 Franklin Square, New Britain. Burial will be in Rose Hill Memorial Park in Rocky Hill. Calling hours are Thursday evening from 6-8 p.m. at Carlson Funeral Home, 45 Franklin Square, New Britain.
