Elaine Grossman Obituary

Elaine Marcus Grossman, 75, of Orange, CT and formerly of Branford and Newington, died Thursday, March 22 after a courageous battle with glioblastoma. She was born in New Haven, CT on February 10, 1943, the daughter of Esther (Greenberg) and Albert Marcus. She is predeceased by her best friend and husband of 42 years, Jay Grossman. Elaine graduated from the University of Connecticut in 1964 and began her elementary school teaching career in Wallingford before earning her master's degree in Speech Pathology from Southern Connecticut State University and enjoying 28 years as a speech pathologist in the Durham/Middlefield school district. Upon her retirement, her colleagues presented her with a plaque that read: "Never reach out your hand unless you are willing to extend your arm." She carried this compassionate spirit beyond her teaching days, volunteering with children and supporting cancer research. Above all, Elaine valued time spent boating on Long Island Sound and watching UCONN basketball and Red Sox games with her many friends and, especially, her family who could not have asked for a more caring and devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Elaine is survived by her daughter Andrea of Boston, son Michael (Abigail Fierman) and grandsons Tyler and Jack of Boston. Funeral Services will be held in the Chapel at Congregation B'nai Jacob, 75 Rimmon Road, Woodbridge, CT on Sunday morning, March 25 at 9:30 o'clock followed by burial at B'nai Jacob Memorial Park 200 Wintergreen Avenue, New Haven CT. A period of mourning will be observed at 174 Sunrise Hill Circle, Orange, CT following the burial until 6 PM and on Monday, March 26 at 255 Shawmut Avenue in Boston from 5 PM to 8 PM. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Office of Development, Yale Cancer Center Closer to Free Fund, P.O. Box 1849, New Haven, CT 06508 or made online, www.givetoynnh.org/closertofree. I shall always remember your warm wonderful smile and the sparkle in your eye. The wonderful times we had when the children were young in the neighborhood, shall always be in my heart. It was an honor to have shared your journey with you. Rest in Peace, I shall never forget the times we shared. What a wonderful lady your were.
