Elinor Smith

1922 - 2019

Elinor "Ellie" (Franklin) Smith, of Simsbury, wife of the late Paul K. D'Arcy, died Monday, June 10, 2019 at her home. She was born February 24, 1922 in Winsted, daughter of the late Walter G. and Elinor M. Franklin and had lived in Lyme prior to moving to Simsbury 6 years ago. She was a graduate of the University of Connecticut, Class of 1944. She received her Masters Degree in Special Education from the University of Hartford, Class 1964. She was predeceased by parents, sister Elizabeth Ramsey, brothers Roger, William and Kimble Franklin, her first husband Wyllys Smith, as well as her son Howard Smith. Elinor Smith was a School Teacher for many years while raising her two sons Howard and Norman. She taught in Winsted, CT, Morrisville, VT and Newington, CT. She met Paul D'arcy of Windsor and Windsor Locks, CT at the Baldwin Yacht Club in the late 1970s. They built a house in Virgin Gorda, BVI and their main residence at Hamburg Cove, Lyme, CT. They were very active sailors, to the extent that they participated in, and won 2 races from Buzzards Bay to Bermuda. Elinor was an active gardener and an active member of the Garden Gang at Florence Griswold museum in Old Lyme. She and husband Paul were members of the First Congregational Church in Old Lyme. Elinor Smith is survived by her son, Norman Smith of Seattle, WA and Paul's four sons John, Ed, Joe, Alan and Paul's grandsons, Brendon and Justin D'Arcy. A Memorial Service will be held at the gravesites of Ellie and Paul at 10:00 am Thursday June 27 at Eight Mile River Cemetery (Mt. Archer Cemetery).
