Eric Auer Obituary

Eric Auer, 63, of Killingworth died at home with his family after a year-long battle with brain cancer. Born April 3, 1953 in Hartford, CT to Oscar Auer and the late Vivian Engstrom Auer, Eric was a lifelong resident of Killingworth whose contributions to the community were recognized long before his illness. He was inducted into the Haddam-Killingworth Hall of Fame in 2013 and honored as the 2014 Citizen of the Year by the Killingworth Lions Club. He was a founding member of the Killingworth Chamber of Commerce and served as a member of the Killingworth Foundation Board of Directors since its inception. He served the town of Killingworth across three decades on the Zoning Board of Appeals and the Inland Wetlands and Watercourse Commission. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn, his three children, Vivian Jane, Eric William and Sarah Mary all of Killingworth and his father Oscar Auer of Litchfield, CT; his five brothers and sisters as well as his ten much loved nieces and nephews. Services are scheduled for 11 am on Friday, March 17th at the Killingworth Congregational Church. Memorial donations may be made online to the Closer to Free Fund at Smilow Cancer Hospital or to the Connecticut Hospice.

Eric was truly the epitome of mensch. I don't know a better word for one so kind hearted, civic minded, family centered, and business savvy. He set an example for my brothers as young teens working for him. He trusted me with his sweet, sensitive son, a kindergartener already knew how to lead and work hard. He raised a wonderful daughter who was the perfect companion for Allie in her most formative years. He will be missed by our whole family. Not running into Eric around town will leave a hole in my heart. Amy Koepke and family (Killingworth)

So sorry to hear about Eric and your loss. I got to know him through golf at Quarry Ridge. He always had a smile on his face and was a pleasure to be around. He would joke that he was writing a book on How Not To Play Golf. We are better for having known Eric and he will be sorely missed.

Will be thinking of the Auer family and Eric tomorrow. In early high school I loved being at your home for picnics and being surrounded by your great family. I'm sorry I missed knowing all of you as adults but you all had a huge part in teaching me how to be a great mom and wife by the example you set. I remember your mom's service so well, at the same church where Eric will be remembered tomorrow. Linnea, you were so little and cute! Karl and Leslie, you were pretty young as well and so much fun, as I had no younger siblings. Fred, I admired you because you had the cool VW bug! Arthur, you were just SO much older! And Mr. Auer, you and Mrs. Auer were always so kind to me. It looks like Eric made an amazing difference in many lives. I live in Texas with my husband of 35 years and his close-knit family of 5 siblings and our two boys. God Bless all of you!

March 15, 2017

Linn, my heart felt prayer is that your family will find comfort in the knowledge that God will help you all to find peace and comfort in your memories of times with Eric. God will turn your tears of sorrow into joy at each memory and thought of your brother. This is my prayer for you, my friend. Sending much love to you......(Dahlia Jean Tumavicus)

We are so sorry to hear of Eric's passing. My husband, knew him through the golf course and always said what a great guy Eric was. When we heard of his passing we looked around our house and thought about how much we "owed thanks" to Eric...from all our shrubs to extra deep counters. You are all in our thoughts and prayers, as we know how much his family meant to him.
