Helen Dowd Obituary

Sister Helen Dowd (Sister Mary St. John), a member of the Sisters of St. Joseph, West Hartford, CT died at Brookdale, West Hartford, CT on December 4, 2022. Born in Hartford, CT on June 27, 1928 of the late John Joseph Dowd and Nellie Mary (McKeon), Sister Helen entered the Sisters of St. Joseph on September 8, 1948 and celebrated her Profession of Vows on August 24, 1954. At the time of her death she was 94 years of age and in her 74th year of Religious Life. Sister Helen earned a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Education from Diocesan Sisters College, West Hartford, CT and a Master's Degree in Special Education from St. Joseph University, West Hartford, CT. Having taught for twenty-one years in the Archdiocese of Hartford Schools, Sister Helen founded the Intensive Education Center at the Provincial House of the Sisters of St. Joseph on Park Rd, West Hartford, with the primary focus on students with special learning needs. This would become what was known as "The School Built on Love." As this ministry and the school expanded, it moved to a new site in West Hartford which was a former synagogue and under a new name – the Intensive Education Academy. As Sister Helen's vision grew, so did the school, as an Arts Center and the Ellen Jeanne Goldfarb Auditorium were established. Sister Helen often voiced that much of her success was accomplished through the assistance of many benefactors, friends, staff, Board of Directors and the Women's Auxiliary. Through IEA, numerous students were able to succeed in life, reaching their full potential and paying forward the talents and kindness they received. Sister Helen was a great support to the families of the students. She was a prayerful woman of faith who valued family, loyalty, love and devotion to others. The Dowd family and the Sisters of St. Joseph wish to thank Sister Helen's caregivers who were so compassionate to her these past 16 months. In addition to her Sisters in Community, Sister Helen is survived by her nephew Robert Dowd and his wife Terry of Arizona, her nieces Jeanne Dowd of West Hartford, Joanna Dowd Kohfeld of Oregon, and 8 great-nephews and 9 great grandnephews and grandnieces. She is predeceased by her three brothers, James, Charles and John and sisters-in-law Agnes Dowd and Florence Dowd. Sister Helen's Funeral Mass and Wake will be held on Friday, December 9, 2022 at St. Mark the Evangelist Church, 467 South Quaker Lane, West Hartford. The wake will begin at 9:30 a.m., the Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 a.m., followed by the burial at the Sisters of St. Joseph Cemetery on Ringgold Street in West Hartford. If unvaccinated, please wear a mask. In lieu of flowers, we ask that you consider a memorial donation to the Intensive Education Academy, 840 North Main Street, West Hartford, CT 06117 or to the Sisters of St. Joseph, c/o Office of Mission Advancement, 650 Willard Avenue, Newington, CT 06111. Sister Helen was my director at IEA for many years. She was a kind, generous person who taught me to love teaching and was such an example to all of us. We all miss her and know she is watching over us. She changed the lives of many of the students and teachers alike. She continued to keep my husband and I as part of her family. She has been so missed!

To the family, IEA family, many friends and CSJ I send my heartfelt condolences of the loss of our Beloved Sr. Helen, aka Sister St. John as when I knew her in first grade. The picture below is what she gave me more than 20 years ago when we reconnected. It was on her desk.
This was I believe one of her first years teaching at St. Augustine's.
She was one of a kind.
May she rest in Heavenly Peace.

I attended IEC from 1990 to 1993. Sister Helen was instrumental in my education. I would never have been able to be everything I am without her guidance. She was a wonderful person.

To the wonderful Staff at IEA,
I'm sending my deepest condolences on the passing of Our Beloved Sister Helen.
Sister Helen was truly an angel from God she welcomed all students with open arms and accepted each students unique learning needs with compassion and love .
Before coming to IEA I personally struggled with a learning disability and making friends and I felt misunderstood by my teacher and fellow classmates .
When I first arrived at IEA i knew this was where I belonged because I could feel the love and compassion of all the staff and I finally like I was being accepted by everyone. While at IEA I had my struggles and difficulties that made learning a challenge for the teachers and staff but they always handled my learning difficulties with love and guidance and eventually I overcame my struggles IEA helped me to make friends and showed me how to be a friend ,I met my Best Friend of 23years Kaila Dressler at IEA .
If it wasn't for Sister Helen and IEA I wouldn't be the person I am today .
I'm forever grateful to Sister Helen and all the wonderful staff at IEA who helped make me the person I am today IEA helped me to become a more confident person and I'm forever grateful for all the love and support I received from Sister Helen and the incredible staff . Thank You Sister Helen for everything you will be deeply missed.

I am deeply sorry for the passing of Sister Helen. I was a student for two years. From 1986 to 1988. Sister Helen was always very kind to me and always made me feel I was a person . Also I entered a whole new world of being a student who could overcome so much not just educational but taught me life skills .
Also my Mother became ill and with difficulties , Sister and the staff was very kind to me,I graduate and few days later, my Mother passed away at 44 years old. Sister and a few close staff members came to my mother's service. Kindness was what I remembered as many great things she inspired me .
Sorry for the loss of the family and friends. She will be missed.
