Henry Low Obituary

Henry B.C. Low, Father of Cardiothoracic Surgery, dies at 95. (Bloomfield, CT) Connecticut's premier pioneer in cardiothoracic surgery, Dr. Henry B. C. Low, died peacefully at his Bloomfield home on September 15, 2022. While chief of cardiothoracic surgery at Hartford Hospital, Low performed the state's first successful heart transplant in 1984, and the Henry Low Heart Center was established in his honor. Low leaves behind his wife, Wei Zhang Low, who held him in her arms in their home as he peacefully transitioned into eternity. He also is survived by three living children, Terry, David, and Chris, six grandchildren, Jenny, Jamie, Jackson, Katie, Juliette, and Shelby, two great grandchildren, Evelyn and Hudson, and his loyal assistant and beloved friend Angela Pinkerton. He was pre-deceased by his daughter, Jane. Low's first wife, Betty B.C. Yang, passed away more than 20 years ago. A native of China, born on January 29, 1927, Low was the son of Dr. Low Chin Wen and nurse Pai Hsia Lan who met while training in the United States. He and his then-classmate, Betty, attended medical school at St. John's University in Shanghai, an affiliate of the Penn Divinity School. They fled China in 1949 during the Communist Revolution, eventually settling in Bridgeport, CT to begin their internships. They wed in 1951. Low started in the Pathology Department at Hartford Hospital in 1952, but transitioned to general surgery while doing research on artificial blood vessels. He was advised by his surgical mentors to seek additional training in cardiothoracic surgery at Harvard's Peter Bent Brigham Hospital. He always vividly recalled the first day of his fellowship, when Dwight Harken performed the world's first aortic valve replacement in 1960. He returned to Hartford Hospital where he began to build his legacy of many cardiothoracic "firsts" in the state, including repair of an ascending aortic aneurysm, the first coronary artery bypass graft in 1968, heart valve repairs and replacements, and introduction of an intra-aortic balloon pump to aid failing hearts. His landmark achievement, however, was the state's first successful heart transplant on November 21, 1984. The patient survived 33 years and fathered two daughters. Low made the national news on Valentine's Day 1986 when his transplant team recruited the Strategic Air Command to fly a donor heart from Oklahoma City to the Harford area at supersonic speed to maintain precious organ viability. He performed the state's first pediatric heart transplant in 1987. He re-established his roots, returning repeatedly to his old medical school in Shanghai to help them establish a heart surgery and heart transplant center. There, he met Wei, his operating room nurse, who later became his wife. He was appointed Chairman of the Division of Cardiothoracic Surgery at UConn Health Center in 1994, and received the prestigious UConn medal in 1996. The Henry Low Heart Center at Hartford Hospital was established in November 2001. His Chief of Surgery and former Dean of UConn Medical School, Peter J. Deckers, MD described him as, "A surgeon of high intelligence, unique professional curiosity and creativity, superb technical skills and unmatched altruism, who was constantly committed to the highest standard of innovative, clinical excellence." Dr. Sabet Hashim, chairman of cardiac surgery and co-physician-in-chief of the Hartford HealthCare Heart & Vascular Institute called him,"a brave man and a passionate surgeon – one who undertook extensive training in a then-new field, built a team and a program to support it, and remained an undaunted and respected physician leader." Henry Low was a passionate patron of the arts in the Greater Hartford area. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in his honor be directed to The Bushnell (https://bushnell.org/support/donate), The Hartford Symphony (https://hartfordsymphony.org/individual-support/donate-now/) or The Henry Low Heart Center Fund (https://giving.hartfordhospital.org/tributegifts). A memorial service and reception will be held October 16, 2022 from 1:00 to 4:00 PM in the Autorino Great Hall at The Bushnell, 166 Capitol Ave, Hartford, CT.

I just had to add one more thing as it is making me smile. My mom had to have both mitral and aortic valves replaced when she was 62. She had lost a lot of weight as all her calories were going to keeping her heart beating. She adored Dr. Low and so did we. She said one day he came in her hospital room, lifted one of her legs up and said "Skinny!" She was the kind that got a big kick out of that and was laughing when she told us. She lived 29 years after her surgery, which was longer than they expected. She was lucky to have Dr. Low.

I've been asked to share another memory of Henry so this is one of my favorites.

I took him home one weekend in NH to visit my family. It was winter and there were some high mounds of snow that had been put there by the plows. My brother asked if we wanted to try out his snow mobile - we both said yes. Well, Henry and I were soon soaring through the air. I was always a dare devil so I loved it but poor Henry was hanging onto me for dear life screaming. I suppose it really wasn't funny for Henry but we all had a good laugh afterall. I do hope he remembers it fondly (do you Henry?) I miss my friend.. he had such a great sense of humor.

I was deeply honored to have known Dr. Low for a few years. He and his beloved wife, Wei, are two of the kindest, most genuine people one could ever hope to meet. Dr. Low´s wit and humor, especially his sharp and endearing sarcastic jokes, brought joy to so many, and they will be greatly missed. His wisdom, compassion, and unwavering kindness left a lasting impact on everyone who had the privilege of knowing him.
Dr. Low´s legacy will live on, not only through the countless lives he touched but also through the love and memories he shared with his family and friends. My heart goes out to Wei and the entire family during this incredibly difficult time. Please accept my deepest condolences, and know that my thoughts and prayers are with you all.

Dr. Low operated on my mom in 1989, giving her two mechanical heart valves. He was a great man but also a warm one with a sense of humor. My mom lived to be 91 and passed in 2016. She lived life to the fullest thanks to Dr. Low. No one expected her to live that long after the surgery, and the last year was hard, but we could never thank Dr. Low enough for giving us back our mother.

My belated deepest condolences and sympathy to Dr.Low´s family.
I just learned about Henry´s passing recently. I met Henry in 1967 at Manchester Memorial Hospital when I was an intern, subsequently I had had a great pleasure of working with him as an Anesthesiology resident as well as an attending for several decades until he retired. He was a friendly, charming, talented and intellectual gentleman and surgeon.
He will be greatly missed by all those who were lucky enough to know him and work with him. Bill Ahn,Manchesterj,CT

Cherish the memory of Dr. Henry BC Low
As an honorary professor of Shanghai Second Medical University, Dr Low trained the Cardiac Surgery team of Renji Hospital in Shanghai as well as in Hartford. He initiated coronary artery bypass graft (CABG) in early 1990s and performed the first radio frequency ablation surgery for atrial fibrillation in Shanghai. In the year of 2000, the first heart transplantation in Pudong, Shanghai Developing Zone was successfully performed with the help of his longtime training. He donated devices of intra aortic balloon pumps and cell saver machines in 1998, both were for first time applied in Shanghai, which had saved hundreds of lives and tens of thousands liters of blood at that time. He always brought the state of art techniques in cardiac surgery during his visited.
Dr. Low was conferred "Magnolia Award" in 2004, which is the highest honor for foreigners, by Shanghai municipal government in appreciation of his valuable contribution in cardiac surgery.
As the chief of cardiac surgery of Shanghai Renji hospital, on behalf of my team I am deeply grateful for his longtime support, in training cardiac team and developing new techniques. All the team members in Shanghai are missing the time we working and living together with Dr. Low. We will hold a memorial ceremony for Dr. Low on Oct.16th afternoon at the same time as Hartford colleagues.

***SOME PEOPLE MEAN MORE ***

My deepest sympathy to the Low family and the Hartford Hospital family for their profound loss.

I worked in the first Cardiac Laboratory of Hartford Hospital during the years 1966 - 197l.
The Cardiac Laboratory was the first small, humble laboratory at that time in the basement
of Hartford Hospital with a staff of three doctors who performed coronary arteriographies.
Dr. Low was the only doctor outside the lab who had a "key" to the laboratory to view photos before surgery before written reports. He was as personable as he was competent, always exceptionally devoted to his work.

To all doctors, personnel, and patients of Hartford Hospital, Dr. Low left a legacy of perseverance, kindness, expertise, and devotion for the field of Cardiology for all to follow in his footsteps during his many years of practice.

May Dr. Low be in a place of enlightenment and peace surrounded by God's love for eternity.

Sincerely,
Joan M. Craco

Chris lived with Arlen and me in Cambridge for a number of years - around when she made her first trip to Haiti and she had "Bo" or Beauregard, her beloved dog. She was always a whirlwind of energy with lots of stories to share (and I know she still is!). She frequently mentioned her father and it was clear that he was an incredible doctor and a one of a kind human being who was devoted to making the world a better place, one human heart at a time. Arlen and I send our condolences and our love to Chris and the entire family. Ann and Arlen

I am so sorry for your family´s loss. He was such a warm and compassionate person with the expertise to help and mend so many lives.
We were so saved by his skilled mind and hands. I say we because Dr. Low performed a triple bypass on my father and a year to the day later he accomplished a mitral valve replacement on me. I was 33 at the time and am 72 now.
I thank him and his family for giving him the support to give all of his patients a better life. I always looked forward to my yearly visits after the surgery to thank him again.

As with so many others, my experience with Dr. Low came as he performed bypass surgery on my husband, allowing him many more years of active life. Dr. Low explained everything so clearly to us, and drew us diagrams of what the surgery would entail. Such a special person. My sincere sympathy to Dr. Low's family and close friends, and especially to his assistant, Angela. I'll never forget her efficiency and expertise, and most of all her kindness. They were a great team.

Dr. Low saved my grandmother's life in the 60's. at Hartford Hospital. She had an aortic aneurysm in her 50's. Because of Dr. Low I was blessed to have this wonderful woman as my grandmother until she died at 93. After about 20 years, Dr. Low saw my Mom and me at Hartford Hospital and remembered us because of my grandmother and the fact that she gave him a Russel Stover chocolate every day that he came into see her after her surgery!! He actually told my Mom and me that fact. What a wonderful man and surgeon he was!! My grandmother loved him and so did we for saving her life.

To the family of Dr. Henry Low, my sincerest condolences to all of you. Dr. Low performed triple bypass surgery on my father, George Parkhurst in 1972 when he was 45 years old. Open heart surgery was still relatively new at that point. Dr. Low hoped that my dad would have 10-20 years of good health, based on his relatively young age. Thanks to Dr . Low´s skills and my dad´s determination, he lived for nearly 38 years! Thank you Dr. Low for helping to give us all those years we would otherwise not have had. RIP...

Though many, especially his patients, me among them, will rightly highly complement his clinical competence, I choose to celebrate his consistent, courageous, honest and deep commitment to those many of us fortunate enough to have called Henry, "my friend". Thereafter, no matter what, he was there for you in good or in difficult times, dependable, present, fully supportive and enabling. Your need or cause, or even perhaps idealistic wish, became his. This beneficence knew no local, national or international boundary. He was a true steward aware of his considerable gifts who gave back of his time, talents and even treasure unconditionally. The human family is so much better for his long beautiful life.
May he rest in the Eternal Peace he so much deserves.

What a great man whose contributions and skills have saved countless lives. Indeed one who is more than worthy of the "Thank You For Your Service" statement that we hear so often, and THANKS to the CREATOR for putting such great man in the world to help people.

Dear Low Family
My prayers are with you as you travel life without your remarkable Dr.Low. My dad (Clifton "Kip" Benson) was fortunate to have Dr. Low do a quadruple bypass in 1993. My dad at the time was 75. Dr.Low hoped he would get at least 7 years but dad lived to 93 and never had heart issues again! Our family is eternally grateful to Dr.Low for enabling our family to have many years of having our Dad.
You too have been blessed with many years of having Dr.Low. God bless him and you all.
