KIERNAN, Holly Frances
Holly Frances Kiernan, 93, of Broad Brook, passed away at home on October 9, 2013. Holly was born in Hartford on August 23, 1920 to parents Ann Neary Curtin and John G. Curtin. Holly lived her youth and early adult life in East Hartford. An accomplished singer, at age 18 Holly won first prize in a regional radio broadcast staged at Hartford's Bushnell Memorial. Thereafter, she performed with various bands in Connecticut, including Jimmy Dorsey and Cab Calloway. In 1941, Holly married high school sweetheart Sherwood "Shep" Kiernan, and in 1954 the couple moved to Broad Brook, providing a rural environment in which to raise their young family. Holly remained actively employed as a secretary throughout her life. She entered full retirement at age 85 following ten years part time employment with Southern Auto Auction. Holly, alongside husband Shep, remained an active participant in the East Windsor Lions Club. In support of the Lions' cause, Holly volunteered many hours to help the Lions prepare for their various functions such as their annual auction, beer fest, and holiday events. Most notably, Holly performed annually in the Lions Club variety show, combining her sense of humor with a song. In 1980, following the death of her husband of 39 years, Holly collaborated with the East Windsor Lions Club to establish a memorial scholarship fund, an effort to encourage and support the college pursuit of a graduating East Windsor High School senior. Holly leaves behind two sons, Sherwood C. Kiernan, Jr. and his wife Rita of Maryland, Jeffry B. Kiernan of East Windsor; a daughter, Jo Ann Kiernan of East Hartford; 11 grandchildren, four great-grandchildren, one niece, one nephew, her devoted and loyal friend Delores Norton, and her longtime companion Pesto the cat. Holly was predeceased by her husband, Sherwood; her sister, Shirley Hills of New Jersey; and an infant brother, Warren. The family wishes to thank Stephanie, Home Health Aide, for her time, genuine care, and support during the past few months.
